today, I decided I want to do a set of morgan and Peace dollars. I am only 17, so money is a big factor... thats why I decided to make a date only set. I bought the dansco silver dollar album which has 48 open holes, so I should be able to fit both sets in that 1 album. is this possible to complete without having to spend over $100 on any specific coin? if so, what grade do you recommend doing this in? I think it would look really nice in VF/XF, but not sure if my budget will allow for that. if anyone here has done the same set, let me know, and also tell me what the most expensive date you had to get was. thanks!

Uhh... Good luck!
I see that you are 17, so you can get a job (a little hard at 14, lol...) so i'd assume it's doable... I dont see you being able to complete the sets for each coin under $100. The 1921 High Relief Peace dollar is REALLY HARD to get, and there are several other REALLY expensive morgans.

COTW is right. In fact, someone recently posted a guide for those interested in starting new sets just a bit ago.

As for completing a set of Morgans or Peace dollars with every purchase under $100, I'm afraid that won't be possible. Unless you're fine with AG key dates.

Good luck finishing the set. The 24 S is expensive in higher conditions.

Dansco 7172 is on my future list. You might want to take a look at it as it includes Ike's, so might give you more budget affordable coins to fill while you wait for a job.

i ordered the 7177. I only want to do a date set, not a full date and mintmark set. after looking at my rebook, I realized that there are a few morgans that will be a couple hundred dollars. oh well, it will just take a little longer to complete. I'm still excited to do this because I love the way these coins look but have never really collected them. plus christmas is coming soonso hopefully I can get a few nicer date coins

Have fun with 1895. P mint is proof only, and S and O mints are expensive as well.

There is an option for most years in AU for $35-40, MS62 about $60. Your tricky dates will be 1893, 1984, 1895. For 1893, the P is $160 in G. For 1894, an O can be had in VF for $75. And for 1895, an O in G is $210.

At today's prices, an set with the commons in AU and the others as noted, the total retail spend is about $1500. For many of these commons, the value is tied to silver, so if silver rises, so will these prices.

mccaniz... can it be done - you betcha.. will it take a while.. unless you are wealthy - you betcha...

I'm waaaay older than you, have two sons that are way older than you and I'm still working on my Morgan set. I completed the peace set this year..

However the Morgan set is a lot more difficult. I'm assuming it's going to be a lifelong trial..

if you're willing to go into it for the long haul it can certainly be done.

I would suggest discovering which grade your happiest with and set your sites. There are a lot of difficult dates to acquire in the Morgan series but certainly not unattainable. The Peace set has two ('21 and '28). There are other low mintage dates as well but still more affordable than the two I mentioned.

I would start with the Peace set. Only 24 coins to be had there and you can get most of them easily enough.

Good Luck! Keep us posted and lets see pics!

I would do the Peace dollar first and try to get them in as best of condition as you can. I would try and get them all in AU condition, but it will cost more than $100 a coin for some. For the Morgans you can spend some thousands or millions.

Doing a dollar set is a lot of fun.

The blank dollar album will work just fine, but I would suggest checking
out the Dansco dollar date set albums.

They offer a Morgan dollar date set, and a dollar date set 1878 - 1999.

Each album will have a labeled port, one for each year and at the end
of each section, has a port for each mint.

As others have mention, the years 1893 and 1895 will be the hardest.
In lower grades the other grades can be bought for $100 or less.
Many will cost a lot less.

I would not worry so much about the higher cost coins, this is not a race.
There is nothing wrong with taking decades to complete some of the
harder sets.

Many people will spend a lifetime completing to improving their favorite
set/collection. I know I have been working on my type set for over
30 years.

I do have both the Dansco dollar date set, and a full Morgan two album
set. My date set I am trying to update with higher grade coins,. The full
Morgan set, I pretty much am just buying any grade coins to fill the holes.
I still need five coins for a complete set. I feel it will still take me a few more
years to purchase those last five coins.

Your idea of doing your coins in VF/XF sounds like a good plan.
My suggestion would be to take your time, and look for problem
free coins.

Mccanniz .... It sounds to me that you intend to assemble a "year set" - one coin for each year issued. As silver is low at present, it's a good time to start that, methinks. It's quite doable, but expect to pay more than $100 for the 1893 and 1895 Morgans. If you can get to a coin show, you can probably find a decent 1921 Peace $1 for under $100. Be very wary of buying any Chinese counterfeits online. That's why I'd strongly suggest visiting dealers at shows or else local shops. You'd be wise to match the grades, shooting for VF at minimum, avoiding problem coins. At today's prices, I don't see any downside as an investment.

just letting you know, because these coins are in a book, the reverse pictures of them are switched, so each coins reverse picture is not in the same spot as the obverse pic. the reverse is either 1 above or 1 below its original spot. I'm sure you can figure it out

I like it. If I wasn't going to focus on 7070 right now, I'd start this one up... I'm sure I'll break my plans and go for this one soon.
