I just received my 1887 MS65 NGC rainbow toner. I bought the coin on a whim. My photos are below. This is the first rainbow in my collection. Could this be classified as a Monster Toner as she looked much better in hand than seller's photos?

That's nice looking. I kind of want to get a nice rainbow, just for the looks.

I wouldn't call it a monster, but it is nice. Monster toners need more vibrance, more greens and reds.

Yes, his avatar is an absolute monster. A moose, in my opinion.

She's nice slider but not technically a monster. I'm sure you've seen this site. There's a nice pictorial graph of the stages and types of toning showing what are true monsters

Thanks Cascade,

Based on the photo chart to rate toners, I would put the coin in the mid high toned range. I really do not want to get hooked on toners as I am still working on my PL and DMPL collection, but I already of had thoughts of doing a blue face collection of toners.
Rest in Peace

Yeah, I was thinking it's around mid to upper range. I've really grown to appreciate obverse toners. Nice pick!

That's an interesting link Cascade with lots of pretty pictures! The only thing I find odd is 656.9 Million Morgans an they estimate out of that number... only 10k toned?

Sadly, many of the original monsters were dipped by dealers and collectors alike when colorful Morgans were frowned upon. Yep, there was a time when cleaning coins was OK, but a rainbow Morgan. . . heaven forbid. Oh, the agony.

Yup, when dealers bought bags from the treasury releases they would dip the "colored" ones to remove that "awful" toning.

Oh the humanity!

Have you read about the Pitman act yet. If not get a box of tissues first
