My son called me yesterday about a Buffalo nickel he found in circulation. It was the first Buffalo nickel he had seen in his lifetime. He was real excited and I asked him what was the date. He said, "there is no date". I told him if the date is missing the coin is likely to be worth about a dime. He was so disappointed and I felt bad telling him his great find had little value.

Today I purchased the coins below in photo. I plan on giving my son the Buffalo nickels with a date as a gift. I paid $23 plus shipping. It looks like the coins have been in the holders a long time. There was no photos of the reverse, but I figure there are 22 different common dates. Any comments are welcome.

That is a great gift to learn from...I personally would change the flips out since there is dicolorarikn on a lot of them. But that is just my preference. It is a really fantastic gift you are giving :)

Great gift. How old is your son if you don't mind me asking? You may want to add a folder.

My son is in his 20's and has a 5 year old daughter. He has been showing some interest in my Morgan coin collection, but he does not see himself as a collector. I thought I would plant the seed with the Buffalo nickels.

I think high grade Buffalo nickels might be one of the better coin collection goals around now. The image is iconic. In mint condition they just look fantastic to the eye.

I first had an Image of your son being about 8 or 9 . Maybe he'll take to collecting now. Nice gift.

Excellent gift!

You could always get him a book on Buffalo nickels some day.

And, of course, more coins.

You ought to show him how to find the date by etching it in vinegar. I did that and it turned out to be a 1916-D.

What a nice gift for your son. Perhaps it just might ignite a new spark!
