Take a look at this 1953 cent, graded MS-63 Red by ICCS. It looks like crap. Thumbprints, stains, etc. Don't see any red at all. I would never call this a red coin. What is the actual standard that defines a red coin?

(I like how the seller in this adds to the auction that it is a "beautiful coin". Looks like he found it under the kitchen counter. )

It's all an opinion. ICCS is a little more lenient with the "red" designation. Usually anything close to red is red. The coin might have luster for all we know, but the pictures didn't show it.

PCGS on the other hand is a lot stricter with the red designation. Which is why red PCGS cents are usually more desirable than ICCS reds.

Again, it's all an opinion, but I think anything about "80%" red is a a red

Grading is a matter of opinion. In my opinion, there is nothing "Red" about that coin...

ahaha

It's definitely now a pretty coin. I wonder if these can change over time in the holder. I know that ICCS flaps and other TPG holders are not impermeable to vapour so I'm guessing they can change if they aren't stored in low humidity

..and if you are a regular customer/dealer in the ICCS supply system,..maybe the knife falls in your favor at grading time..( but that's just "an opinion" of mine)...
