I'm really interested in this Half Dime. Its listed on ebay. Here's the link.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...WA:IT&ih=014

Seller didn't list a return policy so I've been asking questions and also mentioned the returned policy and the fact that I wouldn't want to spend this $$ without a return policy. This is the response from the seller:
"I'll work with you if I can. I know some people want to take things out on approval and have them graded. I bought this from a dealer of 40+ years and we both looked at it. I'm also tempted. I might relist but it is so nice, I might also pull out one of my Half Dimes in my type set and replace it with this one. I have a beautiful 1845 that in detail is mint perfect but appears to have been ever so slightly dipped. The dippers will dillute the dipping acid with water to "gently" clean it. This 1845 is just a very, very low circulated dime that may have been gently dipped. I have others but not as good as this one. I mentioned that there was a little nick or bump, I hate to use the word gouge because you can't see it unless you use magnification. But there is a small amount of dark in this little area which makes me and the old coin dealer think it is original. The coin is not uniform in color. There are different degrees in toning also that reinforces the not cleaned idea. The edges and around all other detail has luster, but the fields are just a shade or two darker. These Half Dimes are delicate and lost the battle when bumped up against larger coins. You sound like a decent guy that wants his money's worth. With insurance of $3 and delivery confirmation, I would probably give you about 3 or so days to call or email that you are not satisfied. In that case, if the coin was returned like it was sent, I would send the cost of the coin only. It is sometimes hard to weed out the guys that are shooting straight and the guys that are trying to get an MS-63 for XF price."

I would like to hear your opinion before deciding.

Thank you.

Hi Shatsi ! Nice to see you !

The seller needs to look at his own auction pictures ,,not that they are that great ,they are small and lifeless , but the coin looks cleaned to me .

If you decide to go ahead with this purchase make the seller come up with a return policy that you are happy with and will protect you if the coin needs to be returned .

ask for and expect much better larger pics before bidding if it was me and I did not get the pics I asked for I would pass .

It's a very nice coin; looks dipped but not washed out. Since the seller knows the techniques, I wouldn't rule out the notion that he's done it before himself. Otherwise his listings look decent and I don't think he's trying to rip you off--you've got his return policy in writing now, so that's a plus. If the coin looks nice in hand and in the album, the price doesn't seem too out of line--I'd make sure to do a completed listings search on Teletrade/Heritage/eBay and wait for some more answers before making a final decision.

I won't comment on the coin quality or the price since I know nothing about this type of coin, but if you are happy with the coin and price, I think the seller seems reputable. His feedback is good and he took the time to send you a very detailed email. In a worst-case scenario, you have Paypal on your side. Paypal almost always sides with the buyer in disputes.

As an ebay seller myself, I cringed when I read the part about wanting to be able to return it. The pictures look fairly straightforward, so in my humble opinion I think that should more or less help you get an idea of what the coin is worth to you.

As sellers, we lose the listing fee and the final value fee if an item is returned. It's not like a traditional brick and mortar store where if you bought something and returned it, the retailer would lose some money off the top (other than the cost to return it to inventory and process the return).

I hope this makes sense. I have a splitting headache so I may not be doing a good job of putting my thoughts clearly onto the post.

I am an ebay powerseller and I happily offer a generous return policy--never less than a week, even on silver bullion/junk coins. Last I checked, sellers don't lose any fees or charges on a returned item.

No one can really tell what a coin is worth to them from a picture on the internet. If I am buying, there are simply too many coins on the web for me to bother with a seller who does not have a stated return policy and I will never deal with a seller who charges anything to return a coin (a restocking fee).

Although I am not an ANA member, I believe their guidelines require a 2 week return period.

Well,
Since I can't pick the coin up and look at it close, I just flat would not buy a coin off ebay without a return policy. No way. Pictures can lie, and frequently it's not intentional. If the light isn't just right, or the angle is off a little, the coin may look much different.

Three days is okay with me, as long as he means NOTIFY him within 3 days, as opposed to actually him having it back in his hands in three days. That would be unreasonable.

I sell on ebay, but haven't sold any coins in awhile now. If I get a return, I get my final value fees back by filing a "mutual withdrawal" UPI. And if the item re-sells on the re-list, I get one insertion fee credited.

Gene - Not everybody operates with just one ebay account.

I'm currently using my sister's account, which had only 20 feedback a few weeks ago (I built it up to about 160 in the past couple of weeks). So I'm a powerseller, but you wouldn't know it if you looked at the account I've been using lately.

Some people also use two accounts...one for selling and one for buying.

I may be over-cynical; but, I dont know what that response implies underneath and I dont know what it's not saying...either way, it's not a response I'd desire....sometimes, I "say" too much...when I do, I'm usually moving towards, "b.s." -- I dont think I'm alone in that.

IMO looks dipped to me! You can do better at that money if you are patient. If you do decide to buy it, use a Paypal and a credit card to protect yourself. As a seller I offer an unconditional seven day return policy and as a buyer I never bid where the seller doesn't offer one. I just bought an expensive Buffalo nickel key date from a seller who offers a return policy. Since I had asked her some questions before buying it, she emailed after the transaction to remind me that if I didn't like the coin to return it and she would refund 100%. That makes me pretty sure I am going to like the coin in hand.

Thanks, after reading everyone's opinion I've decided to pass it. To me his email sounds like he's justifying what he did probably. I also felt if he's confident in what he sells I guess he would offer a return policy. And most of you seem to feel the sameway. So I'll pass.

Thanks again!

Why? You file mutually agreed as returned and get the final fee back. You relist off that auction and when it sells you get the listing fee back. It's not lost.
