Someone help me out. An MS60 1948 Canada silver dollar recently sold at ebay auction for $1950 USD. Now, there are two MS63 1948 S$1 with a buy it now of around $2300 to $2500 USD. So, why not just spend the extra $350 and get the MS63 version of this coin? People must just get caught up in competing with each other and lose sight of price I guess. (Shrug)

This is the type of coin that people only really want to acquire the date of, and aren't looking to get a conditional rarity.
The 1948 $1 is common when compared to actually tough coins like the 1889 10C, 1858 8/5, or the 1906 Small Crown.
The reason the price doesn't spike from MS-60 to MS-63 and then again to MS-65 is because such a large percent of these are in Mint State. At the time, people saw the low mintage of the date and rushed to stockpile these. The low minateg meant that it is still "rarer" than other silver dollars, but since so many are MS, the actual difference in rarity between an AU-50 and MS-60 or an MS-60 and an MS-62 is negligible.
In comparison, the rarity difference between the tens of thousands of 1900 10C's and those few choice gem specimens is evident.

Was this a graded MS60? If ungraded then maybe the buyer thought it was grossly under graded by the seller and bid much much more. $1950 U.S. with the exchange rate and the extra bit the bank or charge card company adds on works out to close to $2700 Canadian. I have tracked ebay auction 1948s and the MS60 has averaged $1681 Canadian including shipping and GST (if charged) over the last two years. I think the price is creeping upwards though because U.S. bidders are getting a better deal than two years ago. (Or they can bid a little higher with more purchasing power).

This one http://www.ebay.com/itm/1948-Canada...AMXQvTlRhQLK has been up there for a year and a half at least. The 1948 is such an interesting coin in the market. If it was a Morgan, the price would be 10-100x. Sellers seem to be willing to wait for their price, and BIN buyers seem to be few. Very rarely a true auction occurs, on a low grade raw coin, and the bidding is fierce up to a point. Buyers seem to be willing to pay up to $1000 just to have one, while the $2000+ graded MS BIN coins seem to sit around. Just my impressions.

Purelywasted, the link that I posted ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/252176258741 ) is of an MS63 rotated dies. At the beginning of this thread, I was saying how an NGC MS60 sold at auction for $1900.00, and here is an MS63 rotated dies for $2100. So why don't people just buy the higher grade with the rotation for the extra $200. I think NGC only has one or two graded higher than this coin. I would like to buy it, but I don't know if I can manage it before Christmas.

If you are in the GTA, area shows you will find a nice ms 63 for around 2300 to 2500, at times there are a few among dealers, and with this coin there are really good ms 63 and what I call crappy ms63. There are many 48 dollars that are the canoe is paddling upill and downhill about 20 degrees

John, I did see an AU58 go at auction for $1750. Here is the list I have right now: George Manz coins: 1948 Canada Silver Dollar ICCS MS63 $3300 USD (SOLD) Calgary Coin: 1948 Canada Silver Dollar ICCS MS63 $3500 USD (SOLD) CDNCOIN: 1948 Canada Silver Dollar ICCS MS63 $2995.00 USD CA Galt: 1948 Canada Silver Dollar Rotated Dies NGC MS63 $2099.00 USD So, right now that is the best deal I have found is that ebay listing, which is $1000 - $1500 cheaper than the other dealers. So I am even thinking, if I buy it, I could relist it at the correct price (or even a little more because the rotation) and pocket the extra $1000 - $2000.

I was referring to kbbpll's post and why it has not sold over last 1.5 years Looking at heritage auctions, recent 1948 dollars MS 63 - $2100-3000 USD MS 62 - $1300-2000 USD I would assume the reason you don't see ungraded 48's at auction is because of the high number of fakes that are on the market. Why take the risk on a relatively high value/highly faked coin. In terms of deal in reselling, probably not, you are taking a lot of risk for a limited return on ebay (remember 12% fees). $2100 is at the low end of recent sales, so you would need to clear $2400 USD to even make a dollar.

I agree with purelywasted. Listing it on ebay (with paypal fees) is close to 13%. So you'll have to definitely sell it closer to the $2400-2500 range to break even. You could post it up for $3000, which means $2600 after fees, but you'll probably be sitting on it for a long while. Finding a buyer might take some time. Not sure if it's worth it anymore.

I have tracked 1948 silver dollars on ebay auction for the last two years. Two MS63 at an average of $2965 Canadian. Seven MS62 at an average of $1880 Canadian. That includes shipping.

Quote: So, why not just spend the extra $350 and get the MS63 version of this coin? Good question. In my collection, across all denominations, there is not a single MS-60 or MS-62 coin. I never understood why anyone would pay more for a scruffy low-MS coin than a near mint, ever-so-slightly-circulated coin with less marks and more eye appeal. It just doesn't make sense, unless you are buying the grade instead of the coin.
