both of those statements are correct. The mint transitioned the metallic content of the cent mid-1982, so cents prior to 1982 & part of the 1982 cents are 95% copper 5% tin/zinc, cents after 1982 & part of the 1982 cents are 97.5% Zinc, 2.5% Copper. It is illegal to melt cents. For this and more information, follow this CCF link to Lincoln Memorial Cents

The melt value is higher than face. Although it is illegal to melt them at this point in time, if/when the mint discontinues production of cents it will be legal to melt them. Many keep them so they can melt them when they are discontinued, although it may be a good idea to hold on to the coins, as they may gain a bit of value after so many get melted.

omg thank you so much numisma thats helps me a lot to decide either to throw it or to keep it. my decision is ill keep collecting and keep it. because I notice all new pennies are like plastic or fake pennies when I toss/flipping the new coins theres no sounds or metal sound unlike the old pennies.. thank you again

Yes, I would keep them. I agree that the new ones don't feel very good. In my opinion, the last high quality American circulation-issue coins were produced in 1982.

The hobby is definitely addicting. One of the big attractors is that there's always more to learn- no matter how much you know about numismatics, it's never quite enough.

It takes about 146 copper cents to make one pound of copper. Copper value is $2.24 per pound, not much of a profit margin. Once you add in melting costs how much are you really making? Is it worth all the hassle? John1

Angelo , you only stared collecting 3 days ago. do what you like for now, but you will more than likely venture out for other kinds of coins that interest you. when that happens you can call yourself a coin collector. To CCF.
