Image: 1939d.jpg62.35 KB I looked thru Bank rolls from banks over last year to build my 1938 thru 1961 nickel book. I found the 1939 denver key in an Bank box of coins. My 1950 d I cheated and bought in on ebay. I am amazed I found it and I finished my set thats complete from 1938 thru 1961. I did it and took an very long time to finish my set from coin roll huting. I never did think I would ever find an 1939 denver nickel in bank box or roll. I amazed my set is done and serval times I wanted to give up on building it since the key dates cost so much money to finish it. Its cheaper to buy an completed sets with keys since keys cost more than intire set does sometimes. Some coins like war time silvers, 1951s, 1942d 1939s I bought on ebay for set. Never in my dreams I would think I would ever find an 1939 denver nickel in bank box of coins. That set finished after an year of roll searching. That 1939 denver coin found finished my set today. I am so happy I done with that set of nickels. 3 more sets I have need serval wartime silvers 1938s, 1938d, 1939d, 1950d coins to be finished. I was building them out extra coins I found in bank boxs or bought on ebay. Chevrolet454ss

Congrats Chevy! I too am actively looking for that 39D....hes a pesky little fellow aint he?!? I lvoe finding coins pulled from circulation, its such a better feeling then picking one up off the net or at a shop. What's your plan now? Stick with the nickels and try and finish off another set or two (they sell for $60 give-or-take on ebay these days) or move onto something new? --Gary

Gary,
I know what saying about it feels beter to find it becides buying from coin shop. I may try finish my 3 other nickel sets I have and start working on my half dollar set. It took thousands of dollars worth rolls to find that 1939 d nickel. I so happy its over on that set. It would nice to find 1950d nickel next in bank roll. You never know it may happen ?

Hey congrats man, I thought this was funny because I was the opposite of you. I found the 50 D in a roll and bought the 39 D. I just bought that one because it was in a bargain box at my local dealers shop. I still have two to go though which is really frustrating, but I will not buy them! I need the 1949 S and the 1955 P. Best of luck on those other sets.

I suppose that in the case of Jefferson nickels, it is feasible to search for the early dates. However, with the new design flooding onto the scene, how long do you predict that the earlier design will be around? My prediction is not for long. I need only the 1921D Liberty Walking Half to complete my set. I am not going to search bank rolls of halves in the hope of finding one. That would be an exercise in futility.

I agree rohumpy...they'll still be around for a while, but they'll (starting with the already somewhat scarce early ones) slowly be disapearing in favor of the new "buddy" Jeffersons. I think it's a good idea to save all of the pre-'62 nickels you can find....best case senario=SCORE! worst=spend them or eat the lose--they're only nickels.

My wife and I just recently finished a set of Jefferson nickels each. We did have to buy the 1950-D.

Congrats! I'm doing the same. It's good to know others are out there. I've got two more to go, 1938D and 1943D. So far I have not bought any.
257,670 nickels searched.
Brian
BTW - I found three 1950D's, so they're out there ... it is all location and luck.

Nice going. I used to do the same thing many, many years ago. I'm not a big Jefferson nickel person but just to have collections of all denominations I wanted complete sets of those. Now have several completed sets from 38 to present. Of course most were found way, way back in time.
