Hey guys, I just found a Sixpence 1951PL from circulation.... I'm pretty stoked about it, accept that its in a bad condition, so much black stuff on it and I can see two significant top layer peels on it.. The top layer is gone and the part has corroded into brown.... Any suggestions on what to do with it? I know its better not to clean it, and what would be the value of this coin? Judging from the condition, I would think its not worth more than 50 cents at the minumum... :) I'm happy but also sad cause I really wanted one of these things, but when I have found it, its in a bad shape.. :( Still, its a good find I guess... :(

I doubt that you'd get 50˘ for it. Value is most likey 'melt', for however much silver is left.

How much is it's melt value? If it was in normal condition?

Someone who knows the troy weight etc will have to answer that one. Not in my realm of knowledge.

If I've done my math correctly, and with the current price of silver, I think it would be worth nearly 74 cents!

Reference Renniks 43rd edition page 43 lists a post war 6d as having 0.04 of a troy ounce (31.1grams) of silver. Spot price for a troy ounce of silver is about $18.5. So 0.04 x $18.5 = 74 cents.

Krause gives these stats for post-1945 sixpences: 2.82 grams of .500 fine silver = 0.0453 ounces ASW (actual silver weight). Based on that, and a price of AU$18.50/oz, you get 84 cents. Subtract a little for whatever has been worn/corroded away.

YAY, I actually profited... LOL So maybe I profited about 60 cents maybe... Don't you reckon hoarding all low mintage coins are profiting? On ebay, one low mintage 50 cent can sell for 1-2 dollars plus a rip off postage of 1.50...

justa, Before you start celebrating you'd have to be extremely lucky to get more than half the going price for silver, when you sell silver coins for their silver content, so you might get 42 cents, less that little bit for wear.

Don't spend it all at once.
