It is a small date cent. That look is commonly seen on Dryer Coins. They are called Dryer Coins because that is one of the ways this happens. A coin can get stuck in a clothes dryer and be constantly hammered on until the devices are all beat down. They will usually have rolled over edges, which this one doesn't. Some others call them spooned coins. The story I got was bored people, like in jail or hobos, would take a spoon and tap on a coin until it looked like this. They are considered damaged and have no added collector value, but it is a nice coin to keep for future reference like a learning tool.
