Another early morning pickup. Paid $19 for this one. 1851 Braided Hair Large Cent. Newcomb N-8 LDS, R3- as best as I can tell from pictures; Thought it might have been a N-26 at first due to the very weak date, might still be. Take a shot at a grade. Coin is raw. Seller pics. @Panzaldi: On some varieties of the '51 the lower half of the die wore much more quickly than the upper, resulting in weak denticles, mushy appearance, a disappearing date, etc. This coin shares those features including weakness on the opposite side of the coin. You can see how the points on some of the stars are flowing out, and that the hair bun (a weak strike point) is actually decent. On the reverse (across from the unfortunate ding) you can see a rim crack developing which in VLDS/TDS would turn into a rim break or Cud. Just my opinion. AB

@paralyse
Where do you find the Newcomb varieties? I'm 100% clueless to what most of that is but wouldn't mind learning more about EAC

The main book is called United States Copper Cents 1816-1857; there are other books by different authors (U. S. Cents 1840-1857 by Grellman, U. S. Large Cents by Noyes, Penny Whimsy by Sheldon) that are also useful. You can also look on PCGS CoinFacts or NGC Coin Explorer to see images of many of the different varieties by year, or browse Heritage or Stacks sold auction listings.
