METEORITE CHASSIGNYSeries: Cosmic Fireballs Country: Fiji Year: 2013 Meteorite: Chassigny Face value: 10 Dollars Metal purity: Silver .999 Weight: 20 g Size: 40 mm Mintage: 999 pcs Mint: New Zealand Mint Packaging (box, CoA, etc.): Comes in a box and with certificate of authenticity Notes:Chassigny is a Mars meteorite which fell on October 3, 1815, at approximately 8:00 am, in Chassigny, Haute-Marne, France. Chassigny is the meteorite for which the chassignites are named, and gives rise to the "C" in SNCs. Chassigny is an olivine cumulate rock (dunite). It consists almost entirely of olivine with intercumulous pyroxene, feldspar, and oxides. Chassigny was the only known chassignite until NWA2737 was found in the Moroccan Sahara in northwest Africa. Chassigny is particularly important because, unlike most SNCs, it contains noble gas compositions different from the current Martian atmosphere. These differences are presumably due to its cumulate (mantle-derived) nature. Source(s):(1) http://www.powercoin.it/en/oceania-...ji-2013.html(2) http://www.apmex.com/product/77358/...ny-meteorite

METEORITE MORASKOSeries: Cosmic Fireballs Country: Fiji Year: 2013 Meteorite: Morasko Face value: 10 Dollars Metal purity: Silver .999 Weight: 20 g Size: 40 mm Mintage: 999 pcs Mint: New Zealand Mint Packaging (box, CoA, etc.): Comes in a box and with certificate of authenticity Notes:The first meteorite found at Morasko was uncovered in 1914 by German soldiers working on the construction of a military fortification. Since then, many further fragments have been found, including one weighing 78 kg in 1956. In September 2006, Krzysztof Socha, a meteorite-hunter from Kielce, working for the Geology department of the city's Adam Mickiewicz University, uncovered with the aid of a metal detector a meteorite which, after the removal of the dirt which covered it, was found to weigh 164 kg. This was the largest meteorite discovered in Poland. Analysis showed that the meteorite contained, apart from iron-nickel alloy, a small quantity of silicates (pyroxenes) not occurring on Earth. In October 2012, a meteorite weighing about 300 kg was recovered from a depth of 2.1 m. METEORITE MAUERKIRCHENSeries: Cosmic Fireballs Country: Fiji Year: 2013 Meteorite: Mauerkirchen Face value: 10 Dollars Metal purity: Silver .999 Weight: 20 g Size: 40 mm Mintage: 999 pcs Mint: New Zealand Mint Packaging (box, CoA, etc.): Comes in a box and with certificate of authenticity Notes:In a letter to Ernst Chladni 'Hofrath' [councilor] Mr. Blumenbach wrote the following about the Mauerkirchen fall: "In the evening, after 4 pm, of November 20, 1768, in the presence of a noticable dark sky in the Occident, several honest people, who have been questioned under oath, heard an unusual roar and a forceful bang in the air. It was similar to a thunder and shooting of cannons. In the middle of this turmoil a stone fell from the air onto the field of the mercenary Georg Bart. It was confirmed by the authorities that this stone, making a hole of 2.5 feet [~ 75 cm] depth, was 6 inches [~15 cm] wide and weighed 38 Bavarian pounds. It is of soft matter so that it can be crumbled with the fingers. The color is bluish, mixed up with some white paste. On top of this it is covered with black bark".(translated from 'Annalen der Physik', Vol. 15, pages 316-317, published in 1803)" The Catalogue of Meteorites lists Mauerkirchen with a quote from E.Chladni as "After detonations, a stone of about 19kg fell, E.F.F. Chladni (1803)", although less than 10kg in total is accounted for in all of the major museum meteorite collections around the World. METEORITE MURCHISONSeries: Cosmic Fireballs Country: Fiji Year: 2013 Meteorite: Murchison Face value: 10 Dollars Metal purity: Silver .999 Weight: 20 g Size: 40 mm Mintage: 999 pcs Mint: New Zealand Mint Packaging (box, CoA, etc.): Comes in a box and with certificate of authenticity Notes:The Murchison meteorite is named after Murchison, Victoria, in Australia. It is one of the most studied meteorites due to its large mass (>100 kg), the fact that it was an observed fall, and that it belongs to a group of meteorites rich in organic compounds. On 28 September 1969 at about 10:58 local time, near the town of Murchison, Victoria, in Australia, a bright fireball was observed to separate into three fragments before disappearing, leaving a cloud of smoke. About 30 seconds later, a tremor was heard. Many fragments were found over an area larger than 13 km², with individual mass up to 7 kg; one, weighing 680 g, broke through a roof and fell in hay. The total collected mass exceeds 100 kg. Source(s): (1) http://www.powercoin.it/en/oceania-...ji-2013.html(2) http://www.amazon.com/Meteorites-Mu...p/B00IRMNLCW

METEORITE NEUSCHWANSTEIN (GOLD)Series: Cosmic Fireballs Country: Fiji Year: 2013 Meteorite: Neuschwanstein Face value: 50 Dollars Metal purity: Gold .999 Weight: 10 g Size: 40 mm Mintage: 999 pcs Mint: New Zealand Mint Packaging (box, CoA, etc.): Comes in a box and with certificate of authenticity Notes:IMHO Cosmic Fireballs series, albeit showing the range of meteorits from all over the world, came out dull in the end. Same design, same outline of all coins, slight variation in coloring and, naturally, different rocks. However, this coin definitely spiced up the set! done for the day. All Fiji fireballs are up. As mentioned above, they came out as somewhat dull. The ones to follow in the next couple of days are quite more fun :)

It's interesting how the Fijian coins actually have the meteorite bits encased in plastic.

Yep, those are plastic(-like) lockets containing the pieces of meteorite.
Interestingly enough, the Australia 2009 coin actually has the small plastic case with the pieces of meteorite which is detached from the coin. Once the coin is out of the capsule, it actually has a perfect round hole in the middle :)

APOLLO 11 MOON METEORITE Series: Looks vaguely similar to all other Cook Islands' coins in the Stardust of the Universe series, but not certain Country: Cook Islands Year: 2009 Meteorite: Not sure, but COA states it's a lunar meteorite Face value: 5 Dollars Metal purity: Silver .925 Weight: 25 g Size: 38.61 mm Mintage: 1,000 pcs Mint: General outline of the COA looks familiar to other coins minted by Coin Invest Trust (CIT), but there is no definitive proof anywhere Packaging (box, CoA, etc.): Comes in a capsule, velvet pouch and with certificate of authenticity Notes:Not much info about the coin, other than there is apparently known typo in the COA, which states that the mintage was 100,000 pcs. By my own experience hunting down this coin, there is no chance it had 100,000 pcs minted. Source(s): http://space-coins.com/meteorite-co...s/index.html

CANYON DIABLO METEORITESeries: Crater Meteorites Country: Niue Year: 2014 Meteorite: Canyon Diablo Face value: 1 New Zealand Dollar Metal purity: Silver .999 Weight: 31.1 g Size: 38.61 mm Mintage: 666 pcs Mint: Mint of Poland Packaging (box, CoA, etc.): Presentation box, capsule and CoA Notes:The Canyon Diablo meteorites include the many fragments of the asteroid that created the Barringer Crater (Meteor Crater), Arizona, USA. Meteorites have been found around the crater rim, and are named for nearby Canyon Diablo, which lies about three to four miles west of the crater. The asteroid fell about 50,000 years ago. The meteorites have been known and collected since the mid-19th century and were known and used by pre-historic Native Americans. The Barringer Crater, from the late 19th to the mid-20th century, was the center of a long dispute over the origin of craters that showed little evidence of volcanism. That debate was settled in the 1950s thanks to Eugene Shoemaker's study of the crater. In 1953, Clair Cameron Patterson measured ratios of the lead isotopes in samples of the meteorite. The result permitted a refinement of the estimate of the age of the Earth to 4.550 billion years (± 70 million years). The reverse of the coin depicts a crater formed through a meteorite impact. In the middle of the coin you will find an original piece of the meteorite. The inscriptions: "Canyon Diablo Meteorite" are found on the top of the rim. The obverse portrays the Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the denomination and the year of issue. Source(s): http://www.jvp-shop.com/mints/meteo...teorite.html

WOLFE CREEK METEORITE Series: Crater Meteorites Country: Niue Year: 2015 Meteorite: Wolfe Creek Face value: 1 New Zealand Dollar Metal purity: Silver .999 Weight: 31.1 g Size: 38.61 mm Mintage: 666 pcs Mint: Mint of Poland Packaging (box, CoA, etc.): Wooden box, capsule and CoA Notes:Wolfe Creek Crater is a well-preserved meteorite impact crater (astrobleme) in Western Australia. It is accessed via the Tanami Road 150 km (93 mi) south of the town of Halls Creek. The crater is central to the Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater National Park. The crater averages about 875 metres in diameter, 60 metres from rim to present crater floor and it is estimated that the meteorite that formed it had a mass of about 50,000 tonnes, while the age is estimated to be less than 300,000 years (Pleistocene). Small numbers of iron meteorites have been found in the vicinity of the crater, as well as larger so-called 'shale-balls', rounded objects made of iron oxide, some weighing as much as 250 kg. It was brought to the attention of scientists after being spotted during an aerial survey in 1947, investigated on the ground two months later, and reported in publication in 1949. The European name for the crater comes from a nearby creek, which was in turn named after Robert Wolfe (early reports misspell the name as Wolf Creek), a prospector and storekeeper during the gold rush that established the town of Halls Creek. The local Djaru (Jaru) Aboriginal people refer to the crater as Kandimalal. There are multiple Dreaming stories about the formation of the crater. One such story describes the crater's round shape being formed by the passage of a rainbow snake out of the earth, while another snake formed the nearby Sturt Creek. Another story, as told by an Elder, is that one day the crescent moon and the evening star passed very close to each other. The evening star became so hot that it fell to the ground, causing an enormous explosion and flash, followed by a dust cloud. This frightened the people and a long time passed before they ventured near the crater to see what had happened. When they finally went there, they realised that this was the site where the evening star had fallen to the Earth. The Djaru people then named the place "Kandimalal" and it is prominent in art from the region. The crater was featured in the 2005 horror film Wolf Creek, and the sequel in 2013, Wolf Creek 2. There is also a great article about this coin - http://agaunews.com/wolfe-creek-met...nyon-diablo/ Source(s): http://www.powercoin.it/en/oceania-...nd-2015.html
