Hey, all! As many (most? all?) of you are probably aware by now, I've been working for years to put together an online digital presentation of my Dansco 7070, as well as other stuff like my collections of U.S. currency and foreign bullion coins. The website can be found here (or just click on the link in my sig line). I've just finished doing a major overhaul of the site and would appreciate some (hopefully) constructive feedback. Feel free to ooh and aah over the contents, but I'm really looking for feedback regarding the overall look, navigability, etc. Here are some of the changes that I recently made: - Originally, I photographed each page of my 7070 album individually. Unfortunately, every page photographed slightly differently depending on the camera angle and lighting, so it didn't have a uniform look. Now, however, I have created a generic background for use with all pages and digitally inserted each coin onto that background (with a little bevel effect to make it look like it's embedded in the album, hopefully).
- Previously, I had broken each page into numerous individual clickable images (one for each coin). That got very difficult to maintain as I upgraded my collection, however. So now each section is a single image and I use image maps to determine which closeup image should be displayed depending on where you click on the main image.
- I'm an old school HTML guy, and I originally coded this page with frames to provide navigation. Unfortunately, search engines kept linking directly to to content pages by themselves instead of to the entire frame set, so the navigation links weren't visible. So I finally decided to jettison frames entirely and just use a little javascript on each content page to display a static menu stored in an external .js file.
Now, I realize all of this is still pretty old-school and I should probably do it all from scratch using CSS or ASP with lots of mouse-over zoom effects and what have you, but I'm not even sure what most of what I just typed even means, so this will have to do for now. Oh -- and I also realize the site probably isn't optimized for mobile devices (which I'm told is the next big thing), but one step at a time, right? Thanks in advance for the feedback, and I hope you enjoy your visit!

Whenever my mouth gets dry I go and take a peek at your page. Nice job!

Hmmmm...
One thing I seem to have lost while moving away from frames is that the left navigation menu no longer stays in one place and instead scrolls out of sight as you scroll down each page. I know there are ways to have a floating menu that stays in place as you scroll, but I don't think that would work given the size of my menu and the possibility that somebody might have a screen resolution that would cause the bottom half of the menu to be permanently hidden from sight. I'll have to look into this some more.

Thanks.
I just can't stop fiddling, though...
I just updated the pages using a little CSS code I found so that the right-hand section of each page will now scroll while the left hand side will stay where it is. Hopefully this works will all screen resolutions.

Wow, that latest change makes it look really bad on my iPhone. Think I'll go back to the version where the menu scrolls out of sight...

Barry - I think that the presentation works very well. I don't think I'd add any additional razzel-dazzel. The focus is pure and the "click over" feature allows excellent depth for the viewer. As you stated, you don't need much in the way of oohs and ahhs. Having said that, it appears that, except for the Saratoga 5 oz, you have what every collector wants...EVRYTHING! I am absolutely awestruck at how complete your collection is, and, on top of that, your examples are Stop-Traffic- Gorgeous. Thanks for sharing your One in a Million, Million dollar, museum of US coinage. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Jack

wow
Only thing I notice, scroll to the bottom of page 4 (maybe a couple before that too), click near the 'page 5' icon, and then slowly bring the mouse up the screen. The page jumps to the left about 1/4"
Otherwise
Wow

Quote: I am absolutely awestruck at how complete your collection is, and, on top of that, your examples are Stop-Traffic- Gorgeous Well, I'll take full credit for completeness, but I'm hesitant to accept the praise on the coins themselves, if only because I have seen so many other collectors here with much nicer examples of just about every coin in my collection. But I'm glad you like them! Quote: Only thing I notice, scroll to the bottom of page 4 (maybe a couple before that too), click near the 'page 5' icon, and then slowly bring the mouse up the screen. The page jumps to the left about 1/4" Hmmmm... That's certainly odd. What are you using to view the site (IE, Chrome, Firefox, etc.)? And are you viewing it on a PC, a table, an iPhone, or what? One thing that may be causing the view to be a bit strange on page 4 is that I cheated a bit and widened one section in order to include the Capped Bust "Heraldic Eagle" dollar. So that might conceivably make things jump a bit as you scroll up and down. Maybe. I'm guessing.

Fantastic. The coins and the presentation are wonderful, and I just can't get enough of those Seated proofs. Just a couple little typos- the T2 gold dollar is captioned as 1854-55, not 56, and the LMC is captioned as 1949 to date, not 59. Very nice and complete set!
