Hi,

This date only has one variety which is an R-3, V1.

Tell me your opinion on the variety and how it looks in terms of being genuine etc.

thx

Here's a close-up of the over-date:

Wow, I just realized that after three years I never got any feedback whatsoever on this little gem.

Apparently, this over-date is the only type of coin produced for this year.

PCGS CoinFacts supports this fact that the mint did not strike any other type of 1811:

If this is indeed the case that this over-date is the only version of this coin, does the terminology of 'variety' even apply?

Or is this an oxymoron since it's impossible for any coin be a variety of itself. Is it analogous to the famous statement, 'Here we have the same difference...'?

In summary, do we have any feedback out there in terms of the coin's authenticity and aforementioned conundrum?

I just realized that I failed to mention another interesting observation.

This coin appears to have a reverse die clash in the 9 to 12 o'clock area.

I have two additional questions:

1) Would the possible existence of a die clash justify checking the box under the 'variety attribution' column when submitting it to PCGS?

2) Since I have seen several other coins with die clashes having a separate variety designation could this coin turn out to be a new discovery warranting some significant interest?

Sorry you didn't get an earlier response. And yes, it's a variety even if there is only one variety for the issue.

As far as the die clashes being attributed as a specific variety for this issue that would seem unlikely IMO and would be a good question for a Liberty Seated dime expert.

Best of luck.

A die clash does NOT create a new variety, it creates a new die stage OF the variety.

Stage I perfect dies, then say a die crack forms you get stage II, then the dies clash, stage III, Another crack stage IV, the clashmarks fade or are polished off Stage V....get the idea?

For any interested parties I also placed this coin in the classical grading section.

One of the participants opined on a grade but also provided some interesting photos on the progressive nature of die crack development for this same series.

While you are visiting this URL to check out these photos you may like to answer some or all of my most recent three specific questions on that URL. These deal with grading with scratches, with whizzing and properly differentiating between the two types.

I really need some guidance on whether or not I should send this coin to PCGS.
