"...help with my best direction to go with starting this collection."
Read a lot. Not the hard drab research you were required to do in school, but the fun exploring with lots of pictures type of reading. There are many sources, but you are already at one good location and VAMworld is another.
Be aware that Morgan collecting can be approached from many angles, which is why is is such a popular area. I started out thinking I would just get one from each year and mint, as I do for my other
US coins. And got pleasantly side tracked by specializing in a very specific area.
Perhaps some of my casual observations will help.
Consider your finances and consult a price guide. Some years and mints are much more affordable than others and still share the same lovely design.
Consider the series (year and mint.) Some are attractive because intrepid pioneers have studied and documented the variations, while others are attractive because they haven't been studied and offer the collector opportunities to do some original research.
If you're not revved up by a tiny scratch in the die, maybe you might like to collect Morgans with beautiful tone. Some folks like error coins, others like pristine mint blast white examples. Look at lots of pictures and discover what excites you.
Explore the websites. Especially the auction houses where you will see coin prices for stuff that sold, and
ebay where lots of optimistic sellers never get a bid.
One that I like is Heritage, because of the archives. You have to register, but there are no costs and they are a reputable source.
http://coins.ha.com/c/search-result...earch-071713Great Collections doesn't have the same data base for past auctions, but they are a good source for coins and also have weekly auctions.

If you have a local coin shop or coin shows you can attend, by all means see what they have to offer. Good dealers want to help you and will spend some time to gain your trust and loyalty.
Most of all, have fun. Keep us posted on your latest acquisition. And ask questions when you need help.
