Were only $10,$5, and $1 denominations made for the North African notes? I pulled a few out that I purchased several years ago and I was not sure if they made a $20,$50 or $100.

$1's, $5's and $10's for North Africa. All silver certificates.

$1 silver certificates and $5, $10 and $20 brown seal notes from the San Francisco Federal Reserve district for Hawaii.

No higher denominations were issued.

$10 was highest for the North Africa notes. Star notes were issued for these as well.

Did they make a 1934 $1? I noticed the $10 and $5 are 1934 but the $1 is 1935.

There were 1934 $1 notes printed, but by the time the North Africa notes were printed, the 1935 (actually 1935A) bills had already taken over.

So... I've been wondering about the $5 North Africa (and Hawaii, for that matter) notes. I understand the intent of the notes, but was it realistic to think that only the Yellow (and Brown) seals circulated in N. Africa (and Hawaii)? If either had been taken over by Axis forces, obviously the Yellow and/or Brown seals would have been devalued but there's no way those were the only notes circulating. Maybe I don't understand the full intent after all.

By the way, that $1 N. Africa note looks nice, just a couple of minor folds. And Julian's signature is always nice to look at.

The North Africa notes were not printed in denominations higher than $10.00 because higher denominations were not needed. Yellow seal notes were only used for paying US military personnel in North Africa and Italy. Most military personnel had most of their pay sent home through allotments and actually received very little pay in their pocket so there was no need for higher denominations.

Hawaii notes were different. While they were used for pay, they were primarily used for commerce in Hawaii. All other currency then on the islands was withdrawn and only Hawaii notes were permitted to circulate on the islands.
