I bought this coin. It is still in the double stapled 2x2 PVC holder. The gross weight is 5.32 grams. I weighed the same kind of 2x2 and two staples which weighs 2.03 grams making the coin's weight at about 3.3 grams (the gold coin should weigh 4.334 grams).
It has some prominent die breaks. I've checked a lot of web photos of the same date and none match. I did find a platinum version on an Italian site that describes it as "Descrizione: Italian States - Papal/Roman States. Platinum 2 ½ Scudi, 1858-R. As Fr-273; As KM-1117. Year XIII. 3.2 grams. Pius IX. Bust left. Reverse: Value and date within wreath. Only 5 pieces struck sometime in the 1950's, as per Metcalf. All order for him. Very Rare. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated. Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500. Ex Edwards H. Metcalf Collection. Categories: World Gold Coins \" Here's their photo:

The images look like they were struck from the same die (the die cracks are from the front of the hairline through the zucchetto, another like a
Cud on the outside of the zucchetto opposite the A, from the rim to the X in the regnal date XIII with a strong match on the base of the X, the die abrasion in front of the A in AN, and the line under the bust is broken whereas on the real coin it is not).
What concerns me is the weight being near the same as the platinum one and that the platinum coin was purportedly minted in the 1950s.
It's obvious that the coin is not the original gold one and must have been minted in the 1950s.
Anyone have any more information or thoughts on this "coin"?
Thanks in advance.
