1897 Barber dime. Common date but nice condition. Can't decide whether it would grade as EF or AU.

AU-50, obverse cuts (if not on holder) and possibly cleaned.

AU details due to the carbon spots/corrosion behind the head and around the date.

I honestly don't think those two carbon spots will result in a details grade I've seen way worse on ( problem free) coins ... I think another thing that some might not take into consideration is that this is a tiny dime with photos blew up the size of a half dollar , therefore it's showing every tiny flaw the coin has when in hand these (carbon spots) and other flaws are very very small... I'm not seeing as much luster as one would expect on an AU coin .... It's right there on the EF / AU line... My thoughts are if it hasnt had a light cleaning , tough to be sure from the photos then it would probably come in around EF 45...

First off, those are not carbon spots. The top spot on the obverse is the start of corrosion, and I don't think acetone nor verdicare would be able to remove that. Second off, the obverse has several hairline scratches, not from a cleaning necessarily but just from circulation.

XF details, environmental damage, light corrosion and major scratches including through the cap, ear, and neck. Coin was struck from very worn dies which does not help it any in this case. Low eye appeal. It does not have enough "meat" to make AU with the wear on the cheek, ear, forehead line, and reverse leaves.

It's a cross between XF-45 and AU-50

Quote: First off, those are not carbon spots. The top spot on the obverse is the start of corrosion What's the difference between corrosion and carbon spotting? And specifically the diagnostics on this coin that have been carefully measured through just the picture. It looks like carbon spotting to me as well but you seemed so authoritative in your deceleration that I had to ask for an understanding of the obviously expert assertion being decreed.
