Two questions:

(1) Is this coin a G4 or does the significant corrosion render it a cull?

(2) There are no known die varieties for this coin, but I've noticed that misplaced dates are very common in this series. It seems the misplaced dates frequently appear as what look like small die chips in the denticles beneath the date. It looks to me like there's a small chip under the 6 on this coin. Any ideas?

Hey, from what I've read on this year, there are 8 RPDs, an MPD in the feathers, a DDR and a 6 in the denticles. I spot a lot of these little marks too, and it's hard to confirm what they are. From the one example I own of true digits in denticles (the 1870 S-8 w/7 digits), these marks are quite large and are either long and straight or curved in the case of a misplaced 0,6,8 etc. It's sort of hard to tell if yours has a sharply defined curve or is possibly a file mark.

As for the corrosion, I think that's a pretty serious case. I don't want to label your coin a "cull", but it's getting there. Sorry--I hope you got better coins from that bulk lot!

This was part of that bulk lot, so I'm happy with it even if it's corroded. It only cost me $.54.

I went through that bulk lot once more (again very quickly) last night and it's a *little* better than I thought. I probably got 20 decent coins out of the bunch. Aside from this 1863 which filled an empty hole, I found one other hole filler in the lot (albeit in G4 at best condition) and two upgrades, so it wasn't all bad. I know I'll get my money back on the resale, so I'm not too bent out of shape.

Kurt - where did you find that info on 1863 pennies? I referred to this site and found nothing...

That coin could not pass through any major grading service with a grade. It is damaged, and being that, it is a cull.

Yeah, that's just one guy's collection--and not all the varieties.
Here's a complete list, although it doesn't have any photos.
