Hello,
I was checking my 1853-O Seated half dollar under the microscope and noticed a straight, raised line of metal on Liberty's neck. This mark is easily visible in the following close-up photo. There is also a thinner line that crosses the upper end of the first line, forming a somewhat T-shaped mark.

My first thought was clash mark, but I don't see any feature on the reverse that corresponds. So, I'm guessing these are from die gouges.
Or, is there another explanation? I'd appreciate any input!

Die gouges are the most likely explanation.

Could be a bag mark from another coin. There is a mark above that on the neck.

One of my favorite quarter reverses. The rays. Got to love them.

The mark is raised, it cannot be a bag mark.

It cannot be a clash mark because clashes show up in the lowest relief on the coin (the field) - not the highest relief on the coin.

What you have is most likely a small die gouge.
