My coin collecting was re-booted late last year when I pre-ordered 20 2015 ASEs from APMEX. I was on the fence of doing the same this year, but with all the talk of possible edge lettering and maaaybe maybe the chance for varieties in this issue I'm pooling together some money to order another 20.

Last year I was fooled by APMEX's "mint direct" packaging. paying an extra $1 for each coin to be encased in a little plastic semi-slab with a "first 30 days of strike" sticker on it. Looks kinda nice, but takes up a lot of room! I think this year I'm just going to order a tube, but that kinda takes away the ability to look at them all without opening the tube/disturbing the coins and possibly taking some of those ms69/70s down a grade. Any advantages really to leaving them sealed unless of course it comes from the San Francisco mint (and a sealed tube is the only way to get that designation via TPG...but I'm not submitting anything for slabbing any time soon).

I also thought APMEX's prices were pretty low, but I see JM Bullion is a tiny bit cheaper for 20 pieces.

So how many are you gonna buy?
In what type of packaging?
pre-order, or wait till their released?
Where you going to buy from?

I usually buy two rolls...and buy when I see a decent price. No rush on these.

I always open the roll to make sure of the date and then reseal. They're not gonna be sent anywhere for grading no not an issue.

To get the (S) on the grading label they have to be submitted in a monster box not by roll. No way to tell one roll from the other (or the coins for that matter)

I will probably only buy a couple when they are released due to the price over spot of ASEs. For stacking I stick with silver I can get for less than $1 over spot.

I'll either tack them onto a JM Bullion order or just visit my local bullion dealer when I have $40 burning a hole in my pocket.

If you submit a whole monster box for grading to get the (S) on the label, then you get shipped back the 500 coins in slabs? That's a lot of slabs...
Rest in Peace

With the premium on ASE's I just collect one brown-label NGC per year to keep my collection current. Granted, it's a lot more expensive to slab what is essentially just an ounce of silver. But I keep all my ASE's in a nine-pocket page album, and I do enjoy albums.

As has been mentioned, if I want silver for silver's sake, there are much better alternatives.

Yep, that's why it's left to the big boys to do. You could specify a minimum grade which would cut back on the coins actually slabbed. I never got into the (S) and (W) thing...give me the visible mint marks

Here's the 407th ASE from a monster box submission. Not much premium on these at all...and for a 70 at that

The year before last I bought my tubes from a "dealer" who was a couple of steps up the ladder and paid a buck a piece for each step.

Last year I went to my LCS for and got four tubes of BU, but also bought a tube of "circulated", which just meant they bounced back from somebody who decided he/she couldn't really afford the landslide. With that last tube I was allowed to pick and choose earlier dates that appeared none the worse for being "circulated" and got a little collection by doing so.

They appreciated the business and remembered me the next time I wanted a real coin and were just a little more flexible on their pricing.

Stay local - when it's affordable - help the local economy!

Foxwoods - I agree, but that's good to know. Interesting, I didn't realize the last half of the numbers on slabs act as serial numbers. Interesting. Oh boy, the ASEs suffer by far from the worst type of "buy the slab not the coin" mentality. I have heard of people not just collecting sets of ASE's, but by a specific color label. Some people just have too much money!

As far as collecting ASEs, I honestly think they can be one of the easiest coins to collect for the beginner. Like I said earlier, buying some last year re-booted my coin collection that I have added to since I was a little kid, and from there I went on a spree trying to buy a sensible collection of dates, proofs, burnished, reverse proofs and the fact that the coins are all most likely ms69-70 it was easy just to look at prices and mintage figures and find a coin at a reasonable price. I liked the design so much I switched to collecting walkers, which is fun, but I cannot tell you how many cleaned or problem walkers I've accidentally bought - a shameful amount in fact. The ASE's of course have a high premium, and numismatic value is questionable, but I can already see some of the burnished 2011 ASEs I've bought have almost double in price in a year! Can't say that about any of the walkers I've bought. OF course we are talking about 80 year old circulated coins vs brand new bullion but it is nice having a bunch of "coins" with full detail in mint state! the 2012 and 13 reverse proof is the most beautiful coin I think I've ever seen.

And Biedercoins - what exactly do you mean by "a couple steps up the ladder, and paying about a buck each step" mean?

I would assume:

Step 1: AP sells to major dealer at a premium
Step 2: major dealer sells to regional dealer at a premium
and maybe:
Step 3: regional dealer sells to local dealer at a premium

..and, yes, ASE have been a long time favorite of mine to collect. Started with Morgan dollars and they started to be expensive so switched to ASE's. It has become more complicated with the RP's, EF's, PF's, finishes and W and S mints.

I just picked up my first 2015 bullion ASEs this past weekend. Went to the LCS in search of a good gift for CCF Secret Santa and snagged a couple just for completeness. They never disappoint!

Spot was $13.99 at the time... with an upcharge of 3.85 per. Ugh. Remind me to stick to 10 oz. bars with an upcharge of 0.89 or less.
