This my most recent purchase for my type set. I would like your opinion on it. I think it'll grade AU55. Doesn't show signs of cleaning but could it have been dipped? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I see no problem with it grading AU55. My goodness what a nice Capped Bust quarter. I especially love the Eagles on these quarters.

Yea looks like it was dipped, not recently though because it is starting to tone back.
I would give it AU-55 obverse and AU58 reverse due to very few visible marks. Overall AU-55 and very well struck!
Nice one!

Very nice! I'm jealous as I'd like to upgrade the VF I have in my collection. Yours = AU55/58 (dipped, but done okay)

Thanks, it is a nice coin. I'm not good at detecting dipped coins yet. If the majority here thinks its dipped I will return it. It was broken out of a ICG AU58 slab.

How can you tell from the picture it was dipped?

Its also a large 1 over small 1 variety, HJB has one similar to this and they list it as a R3.

I was searching David Lawrence site and this is the coin. Who ever bought it in October 07 decided to sell it again.

Personally, even if it was dipped, depending on the luster and overall eye-appeal in hand, I'd keep it. If the dipping didn't strip the luster or leave too much residue you're okay. You can say it's an educated guess by the fact that the coin has the same even look on both sides and as you get to the rims it gets to be a dirty yellow...a classic old dipping sign. Is it possible it was never dipped...sure...but it's really up to you based on how you like the piece. Let's put it another way, I think the coin is likely market acceptable just about anywhere so I don't think you should fret about its value deteriorating if the coin is "all there".

You are getting opinions on whether to keep or send back, but I think a big factor is how much you paid. That figure is none of our business, but should be important to your decision. I just got back my 31 quarter from Anacs. It was given AU58 whizzed. I paid 700 dollars for it and I'm not elated about the deal, but I don't think I would lose anything if I sold it. I bought it in an NNC slab as a 64. It seems very similar in condition as yours but is toned. I also see very similar marks on the close-up that gave mine the whizzed designation.

I paid $606 including s/h. ebay auction. I like the coin but I don't want to include any problem coins in the type set. And the seller has a no question asked return policy which I can still use. I will probably end up returning it.

I understand you not wanting problem coins in your type set, but I'm not sure you understand how difficult that may be, or how expensive. I started getting serious about my type set about 4 years ago. I had 50 coins in my set- all raw. I decided to turn them into a graded set because I had some very nice coins and I wanted my kids to know what they had someday. I sent the best to Anacs because of their availability and continued from there. Of the 76 coins now in the set,13 of them are "problem" coins, but they are all in the old Anacs holders and make a tidy set. I don't always agree with the cleaned marked on the slab and that designation certainly doesn't take away from the beauty of the coin. But it does take away from the cost. A minor example-I bought on ebay an 1857 five cent silver graded MS60 damaged. The damage is a few tiny dot indentations on the reverse that cannot be seen with the naked eye. I got it for 91 dollars including postage. It is a beautiful example of the type and a half to a third of what a non problem would have cost me- if I could find one. I personally would not trade any of my problem coins for one of lesser detail of the same value. Just my view on the subject.
