Bought at a rural auction this morning. Went there for the coins that are usually offered, but which in this instance turned out to all have reserves that generally precluded their purchase (most went unsold), so I came home with this instead.

Ostensibly has $4.00 in it (and there are a substantial number of coins rattling around in it), so I'll have to scrounge another 24 quarters to dump into it to be able to open it. I'd judge it predates 1965 owing to the lack of a zipcode in the manufacturer's address, but whether it'd go back as far as the 1930's I'm just not sure. The sheetmetal construction rather suggests to me a post-WWII timeframe, & the "58-2" might be a date code (Feb. 1958). But how cool will it be if there are any pre-1965 coins in there?

That's really cool. I love these banks and would likely already have put the money in to get it open! Good luck.

Most definitely cool and a wonderful find.

Why don't you run a contest on CCF for guessing, say, the earliest-dated coin?

Well, I put in my quarters and it turns out...

For whatever reason, only $3.05 inside, + a 1993 Mexican 10 centavos. Nothing old or silver.

However, it counted correctly for me, and as a bonus, I discovered that every time you pull the lever to deposit a coin, a bell rings, mimicking a real cash register.

BStrauss3 - Thank you for that webpage link - who'd have thought that much detailed history had been compiled on an item like this? At least my intuituion regarding its age was confirmed.

Interesting pickup. It's a bonus that it still works. Bummer no silver though.

I remember having one of them back in the 60's. Probably cost a buck or 2 in the toy store new. They were fun. Nice buy!

With sales tax and the buyers premium, it came out to about $16.50 - from which you could subtract the $3.05, I suppose.

That's pretty cool.

It reminded me of how I used to save up $10 before going to the bank to make a deposit when I was really young.

Do kids do that anymore? Probably not.

One last remark from me - I looked this evening and there are well over a hundred of these currently listed on ebay, the vast majority of those being auctioned getting no bids. Evidently an extremely common item, so I'm sort of surprised I'd never seen one before today.

My grandfather the coin collector bought this for me as a x-mas present when I was 8 or 9.

Pictured above is the one I bought off ebay a few years ago. My parents either sold the one grandpa gave me or lost it?

Cool! I've considered collecting coin banks. I have a few but they are nothing special. Watch out on the cast iron ones, there are a lot of modern reproductions out there.
