I looked to see if this had already been posted. My apologies if it is a dupe. (I did not find another post for this).

It will be interesting to see how Spain reacts to this. They have made it a nasty habit to go after sunken galleons as "war ships" and thus property of the government of Spain. Odyssey Group learned that the hard way on the "Mercedes AKA Black Swan" wreck.
from online article:

"Valued at as much as $500 million — the richest shipwreck haul in history — the trove was handled by Odyssey and shipped straight to the United States.

The company, which, according to earnings statements, spent $2.6 million to retrieve, transport, store and conserve the precious cargo, has been unable to remove the silver and gold coins from warehouses at the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation in Sarasota, Fla.

Immediately after the treasure was recovered, Spain filed a claim arguing that the treasure originated from the Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes. The 36-gun Spanish frigate sank off the coast of Portugal in 1804 with 200 people aboard following a battle with four British navy ships.

According to an international maritime law known as the doctrine of sovereign immunity, active-duty naval vessels on a noncommercial mission remain the property of the countries that commissioned them. Spain thus claimed the exclusive property of the wreck and its cargo."

Thanks for that tidbit on the Mercedes, jfransch. I guess that one day the market will be flooded with slabbed 1803 8 reales the same way as the 1783s from El Cazador.

This is not new, it's a long lasting story on trial since 20 years (as mentioned in the 2nd part of the article . but the headline is better with amazing sums and "a new find" . ).
I suppose it came again back to light as Colombia is on its way to win the trial against the salvage company which made the initial discovery .

Actually this article is an update to what is happening. The wreck has been "found" on several occasions with varying results. (Salvage companies and divers banned due to shifting political winds in Colombia)
It appears Spain and the last US company to find it, Sea Search Armada, have already lost claims to the treasure

This new attempt is a joint venture between the Colombian Government and a salvage company to finally bring up the treasure. Going to be some interesting stuff, it is believed the personal treasure of the Viceroy of Peru was on this ship.
