Continuing with the spirit of the posting of quite a few early coppers on the forum this weekend, here is another for you guys to comment on and estimate the grade. It is an S-102, R-4. Thanks!

Thank you all for your comments.
A few comments from my side on 1796 BDC's (which happen to be one of my favorite dates in early cents): 1796 Draped Bust Cents are generally considered to be scarce. The most common varieties of the type are at least R-3's. They are also generally recognized as difficult to find with decent planchets and surfaces. 1796 DBC's with smooth, problem free planchets are in fact rarities. Now to this coin: as they come, this coin's planchet is a little rough in areas, but it is devoid of corrosion, pits, verdigris, gross graininess or porosity. I think it would 'straight' grade. Regarding grade, I in my opinion it meets the criteria for VG8. Netting down for minor roughness puts the net grade at G6 to VG7. This is in fact how it was described by the dealer who sold it to me (one of the major copper dealers and whose judgement I respect).
