I know this is a real long shot, but is there any chance this is 18/17? I know the photos are HORRIBLE, but it's a severely worn coin (AG) with a restored date.

I think I see something running through the middle of the 8. Any chance it's the leg of a 7?

Here's a different angle. Sorry, but I am unable to get any kind of decent photo of this coin.

I'm not seeing the flatness evident on the top of the "8" I see in images on the internet. Is it a "D" coin?

The fact that it didn't look as flat on top as some of the photos I've seen is why I was also not sure about it. On the flip side, the diagonal on the 8 of this coin is sharper than the photos of "normal" 1918 nickels and on the bottom left it looks like the bottom of a 7 is meeting up with the curves of an 8. It could just be discolorations from the acid playing tricks on my eyes (coupled with the fact that I'm determined to find something "good" in one of my cheap/free coins )

I don't know if it's a D because it's worn smooth and only the date was acid restored. I don't know if there are any other markers to identify a D-mint. Supposedly there should also be a die crack just above the knot in the indian's braid in all 1918/17 nickels, but I can't even find it in the good examples I've looked at, let alone this worn out old coin. I'll post photos of the entire coin, just in case.

The evidence is inconclusive, but the last obverse photo you posted actually is the best for my old eyes. I'm thinking your right.

Yeah, that full obverse picture says a lot more; but not enough to my untrained eye. I hope it's a 8/7.

I was able to get some *slightly* better pics of the date by holding the coin in at a certain angle. Strangely, one of the new pics came out looking more like an overdate than the others, but the other new photo makes it look like a normal 18, with no 7 overdate.

I don't see the benefit to having this coin looked at by a professional or graded. Even if it is a 1918/17, it will only come in as either "FR-2 Acid Restored" or "AG-3 Acid Restored." Either way, it's not going to be worth much more than $100 (and only worth that much because somebody wants to fill a hole and has no money).

I'd really love to know for sure if I have the real thing though. Do you think a coin shop owner would give me an honest answer, or would they automatically tell me it's nothing, hoping that I'd sell it to him for $2.50?
