I don't know what this is. The area runs across the top through the torch. At first, I thought it was a crack across the top of the feature, but under magnification, it does not look like one. The area has lost its "shine". Perhaps I should say it has lost its luster? What could this be? A drop of acid? Something wrong with the cladding? I don't know! Opinions?

It's Struck Through Grease with grit.

That is a very interesting idea! It makes sense with what I see on the coin! I have never heard of this. Did you reason this out or did you see it discussed somewhere?

Thank you!

Before the grease with grit hypothesis, I'd have said an acidic splash. Grease I get, but where does the grit come in?

I do not know, but I can imagine it coming from the wear and tear on the press and the dies.

I posted a nickel a while back that was the same way. I learned that from Coop. Dirt, grime, metallic dirt, and other stuff, occasionally get in the grease.
