I believe this is Progressive Indirect design Transfer. I would like to find a better one than this!

I don't think this one is showing progressive design transfer.

Note the outline of the bust should be raised more. Also not the bays on the left side of my example. I Don't see that happening on the OP's coin.

Thanks, coop. I did notice that it seemed quite weak. I do see a "shadow" where the head should be. I wonder if there are progressive stages of the image developing and this is an early stage?

I would think you would see progress throughout the life of the die.

I was just looking through a bag of wheaties that I've had in my closet for a while last night and I found a few very strong examples of ghosting, notably on a 1946, 46-S and 51-S.

I agree that the coin in question is not a strongly ghosted coin, but may be an early stage.

That is impressive. I am still looking for my first strong example!

That would make sense to me. Perhaps we should be talking about this feature as weak or strong ghosting. Otherwise, at what point does the appearance of this apparition actually become PIDT? I suppose the answer to that would be in coop's statement, but that leaves a little "wiggle room" for identifying what that point is!

This is progressive on later die states. Some of the time it is there and we don't notice it. I think because the examples found are often BU coins, this makes it easier to see this event on cents.

Let me rephrase that. The 1946-S is the only one I would consider 'strong', but it's clearly present on the other coins mentioned and a couple others.

I just found another ghosted 1946-S that I think may be from the same die as the other but in an earlier state. It has a similar mintmark location and they both share the same weakness on the 4 and 6.
