Hey guys

So for some time now I've been looking for a1859 first year IHC.
Normally these coin sell for 80 dollars or more in the EF range and double that in AU ...
So earlier tonight while scanning ebay I ran across a 1859 graded EF 40 by the questionable NNC ...
Now before anyone gets riled up about that company , I understand their not very popular to say the least ...
I have however purchased NNC graded coins in the past that in my opinion were graded about right , but I've also came across the ms 62s graded 67 not to mention the coins with light problems graded as problem free ...

Anyways knowing all this I still took the chance , the listing photos were really bad and its tough to get a clear look at the coin ....

I purchased the coin for a little less than 30 bucks , so even if this coin is over graded a bit or whatever , I think for the price point I did ok ...
RedBook has VF 20 at $55 and EF 40 at $110 ...

So what do you think guys ? Would you have took the gamble ?

I wouldn't have just because of the number of problem coins in NNC "slabs." Wish you luck though.

Those photos are bad! May have kept the other bidders away. color looks honest, that's even hard to tell. probably more VF than XF , but it sounds like fun and not that much money. Hope you did well! Price seems in line

I personally wouldn't have gone for it, what with the awful picture and a description that just says 'nice coin'. However, at under $30 shipped it's not too much of a gamble. I'm interested to see what it actually looks like.

Good luck! I generally don't ebay things with such a poor pic. I do however drop some $ in slot machines from time to time.
Rest in Peace

Well guys maybe it's not the score I was hoping for :(

I bet that is the same coin I just purchased , I compaired that photo to PCGS photo grade and my ANA grading standards ...
One thing I agree with is it isn't a EF 40 , but I don't think it's as low as F 12 though !

From looking , reading and comparing to me it looks about VF20 possibly even VF30 ...
If it turns out to be a problem free VF 20-25 coin for under 30 bucks , I don't think that's so bad !

Here's a photo of a VF 30 coin from my ANA book ...

Done-A-Little-Bad-Photo-Gambling-On-Ebay-!

I may be wrong but to me this photo above and PCGS photo for a VF25 IHC look quit similar to the photo Dave found ...

So anyone think I'm atleast in the VF range ?
If not might have to return it :(

Let's see the coin "in hand" before getting bent outta shape. You were banking on it being over-graded anyway. Light can do funny things. Best case, you got the coin you wanted and have a benchmark for a possible upgrade down the road. Worse case, you're out shipping.

Copper castle
You know what you are 100% right :)

I really did expect the coin to be graded on the generous side , since it's nnc we're talking about here ...
I was just a bit shocked when a few posted it looked F12!
Myself I have a tough time getting decent photos of copper and have heard others mention they have that problem aswell so maybe that's a small factor !
Like you said it could be lighting or a number of things ....

I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be dissipointed if it was only F12 and man that would be a heck of a overgraded coin :)
As you said though until I get the coin in hand it's going to be hard to pint point whether or not it has these small details that's going to bump the grade up or down !
I will say though that from what I'm seeing it's looking to be VF 20-25 hopefully better , but just have to wait and see I guess ....
At this point it's more less I paid high retail if it's a problem free F12 or got a decent deal if problem free VF ....

At the end of the day it's looks to be a better example than I have , lol you know this is why I call it bad photo gambling ...
You really never know , I've scored some nice coins for a fraction of there value this way but I've also got my butt scorched a time or two :)

COINGUY , on the original link you showed us of that coin the seller did not offer a reverse photo. to me that is a big red flag. not to mention that dumb small pic of obverse.
the price is good. but like they say ; You Get What You Pay For !

I wish you luck.

I am a little confused though... the seller has 100% positive feedback (that's good!) and a substantial number too. Why would an experienced seller post such bad photo's?

Your gamble doesn't seem unreasonable given that it is a coin you want and the price seems like you have more to gain than lose. In my view the odds are in your favour.

I've posted some bad ebay photos before because I was too lazy to take another shot. but they've never been that bad. It's obvious that the seller used a scanner, it's only 15 seconds to crop it....
good luck to OP, seems like a fair gamble to me
