Hey CN; I usually do not buy gold due to the high price-point. However, this year I did buy the US Marshall UNC gold coin. While the proof has more eye appeal, I went for the lower mintage. I did buy it last March and I'm disappointed that the price for the gold coins has plummeted since then.

Keep us updated on your decision.

I ended up snagging a 2015 as my first burnished ASE. Thanks, Hollywood, for reminding me of the ticking clock.

$1 Annual Dollar Set is just creeping along...added less than 500 to 21846....pretty low for this set

Burnished W added 1900 to 198997...also decent

For next year, we may see lower low since there will be quite a few "special releases" from the Mint, which will divert collectors' money from buying these regular coins.

2016 will be an interesting year.
Anyone recall the RP Gold Buffalo vs the regular PF Gold Buffalo?

@welder - sorry for the late reply and thanks for the insight. I'm still trying to figure out what my last minute purchases will be... at this point it's definitely going to be a Marshall, just haven't figured out which one yet. Will keep you posted.

@ScottE - and congrats on your first burnished ASE! Unfortunately, once you start, it's impossible to stop...

They are some cool looking coins and I would get one if you are a collector. If you are looking to make a profit then I would not put money here.

Even with the low present mintage (38k (UNC) and 109k (PF) they sell for less than present Mint price. Is that because they are still available? Maybe... but I think it's just a waning interest in these special issues. That said, I will admit 38k IS a ridiculously low number for a commem though

The listed total mintage (total for both) was 500k which is a bit out there for a commem or ANY coin nowadays.

Sorry...I did not remember that post from a couple of weeks ago. I thought you meant the silver

Same deal with the gold though...they are selling at or below issue price.

NGC MS70 ER unc last sold for $475 and a set of both PF70 and MS70 (ER) went for $765

I just do not see the love for ANY commems right now.

...and 38k for the silver is has more (if any) potential

(my opinion only)

The proof Marshals Au was unavailable when I went to add to my cart. So, it's the UNC for me. I can live with that.

edit: grammar

You talked me into it Hollywood, I didn't need to buy anything... and yet.. :)

Are you in Hollywood CA or just your name? I lived there from August 2008 until March 2015. Didn't know if we used to be neighbors or not.

@CK, sorry about the Marshal gold proof. Hope your unc is of good quality. Part of the reason the uncs don't sell as well is the Mint's indifference to the quality of the finished silver and gold coins. Often there's chatter on the edges in the form of scrapes, digs or loss of texture around the rim. Looks like overextended die life, unlike with the proof coins which are frequently checked. Ordered and returned SR2 twice this year. Low mintage or no, I'm giving up on the gold uncs going forward as I always seem to get bad coins.
