I definitely understand what CotW is saying. Really it's just been this year with my new job that I have been able to save up (and flipping good deals I can find. I will admit I do it to fund my collection) and get some pretty nice coins. My most expensive is a clean VF Capped Bust quarter, but along with that include cleaned nice coins (for better buying prices) Seated half dollar and Trade dollar. I am very happy with my collection and saving for a Seated dollar or nice early large cent is certainly feasible after a year or so of hard saving. :)

Both happy and unhappy
Happy with the progress so far and, well, unhappy in the sense that there always room for improvement. That's how the thrill does not die.

It's kind of like that joke abot 90 year old violinist. They asked him why he's still playing. He replied that he thinks he's getting better.

I like what COTW said about a 'wow' piece. I have been interested in buying a seated half in, say, PR-62 or 63. I may go ahead and spend the $700 or $800, though it would eat up a big portion of my savings. That would certainly be a 'wow' piece and the centerpiece of my collection. I checked out some PR-60 and 61 coins on heritage looking for a cheaper proof, but they all had distracting hairlines so I decided not to settle for anything less than PR-62. It may be a bit before I pull the trigger, though.

It doesn't necessarily take a wow piece...

I've only been collecting a few years and don't have anything slabbed or probably even over a 60 but my collection makes me very happy. I can get out my 4 bucks face of Barber halves quarters and dimes and hold and re-study them whenever I want, without worry as to more wear or whatever because I'm not really in it for profit. Whew, run-on. The hunt is the fun part, it's not such a rush to just look in the safe. That said, I would like a cool slabbed something someday, but I won't fret over it or say it makes it incomplete.

It's a collection, not a collected.

I understand what you mean. However, I do want to have one really incredible piece, and I feel that the seated half proof is the right one.

That is one of the great things about this hobby. There are so many options of what that 'right' one can be. I've still yet to see mine.

I think the theme running through this thread is most people answer "yes and no"

I collect a broad scope, maybe not quite as broad as Sel but a wide variety.

My collection is almost like 11 separate collections...

Ancient Greek,
Ancient Roman,
Ancient Miscellaneous,
British,
American,
Australian,
World,
British Banknotes.
US Banknotes,
World Baknotes,
Bullion.

Some sections I am far happier than others, in fact one of those I feel is complete and up to date (I have an example of every kind of English banknote issued, with every cashier signature... maybe not as high grade as some on here but in acceptable condition for my budget)

Others are hardly dented, USA coins for instance I have a bulk of modern stuff like State Quarters but I am lacking examples of many of the older coins like 3 cent pieces, Half Cents, Two Cents etc.

Some stuff like Bullion I hardly collect these days, but I am glad I bought some of that stuff 20 years back when the prices were low. So that pleases me.

Some of my stuff is treasured because it is valuable, some stuff I treasure because I managed to get it from change as a boy. The story of my grandfathers war travels is written in my world coins, as well as my own extensive travels (in which I always got a set of coins and notes to bring back)
so even though much of it is worthless it still has value to me.

Am I happy with my collection?

But seriously, like many, I'm mostly happy (otherwise I wouldn't keep going) But I have quite a few coins I would like to upgrade or get rid of to raise some more cash.

My problem is that as I have collected I have gotten more discerning (fussy!) about 'eye appeal'. So while there are coins out there, many I just don't give more than a glance these days. And a fair few I liked when I bought them no longer do it for me.

Plus I have many 'gaps' filled and the remaining wants are so rare that it may be another decade before an example comes up for sale.

I don't buy many coins as it is (five this year, and three of those I'd sell right now if I could get back what I paid) so it's going to be a slow process.

But on balance more coins in my collection make me smile when I see them than don't. So it's heading the right way. And.. there's always 2016!

DavidUK: Your collecting interests are wider than mine, with banknotes and bullion, I admit that I have a small collection in that area too, but they are not part of the theme of my collection.

I must admit: I do have a few silver tokens of the British Isles: tradesmans eighteen pences, shillings, Bank of England 5/-, 3/- 1/6 , Bank of Ireland 6/- 10 pence, and 5 pence, (most well less than fine condition). At least they all saw circulation, and that fits my requirement.

Australia only had one silver shilling token (McIntosh & Degraves Sawmillers shilling, Tasmania), and that was never issued; the only example I have seen is in the British Museum.
Also have a Hogarth & Erickson silver token threepence, issued in Sydney; unfortunately this one is holed.

If I narrowed my focus down I don't think I would have as much fun but I would definitely have a more cohesive collection. I like to have a little bit of everything that I think is cool. maybe later on I will narrow my focus just to try and complete some of what you people call "sets"

Pretty much the only "sets" I have are either long-term type set ideas (Russian kopek types, British monarchs*, a few other ones I can't recall immediately) - or something I assembled and bought as a complete or near-complete set in one sitting (German 50 pfennig 1920-1922** with mints, Belgian 25 cents 1964-1975 with languages, and Gloria Romanorum three-emperor type by emperor are some specific examples that come to mind - it's usually some type that I see a lot of in one particular bargain bin, and try to get a set from that bin alone; sometimes, though not often, I try to get what I missed that time from other similar bins later).

Am I happy? Heck no. If I was I wouldn't still be going around and trying to buy anything more.
But I'm definitely happy that it got that far. I'm happy that I could have a coin made 500, or 1500, or 2200 years ago (probably 2500 too, hadn't searched much), without ending up in jail or having to pay back a credit. I'm happy that I could look at all of these coins, and think of how beautiful the pictures are, or how different the world was when they were around (or both, sometimes).
On balance, that probably makes me happy.

*) I kind of cheated with Edward VIII by getting a holed African coin, and I have Canadian and Indian coins from George VI but don't recall if I have any actual British ones, but other than that, I have all from William IV to Elizabeth II
**) I know there should also be an 1919 - I've since got one example of the date (don't recall the mint), but they're mostly rather rare; I think I also have only one date for E mint

Well...some of it yes and some of it no. When I first started collecting and actually up until recently I was happy with any coin in my budget that filled the empty hole in my album. And I have some rough ones for sure. But after finding the CCF and looking at other members collections (like the digital 7070 album that member barryg has among MANY others) my collection for the most part is pretty pitiful in comparison, but it was the best I could do with my budget. BUT my budget could have bought a few nice coins instead of anything I could afford to fill an empty space and I could have had a small box of nice coins instead of boxes of albums filled with filler coins.

So I have picked 2 albums to fill with nicer coins. Washington quarters and am working on a 7070 of VF + to start. Those two will take the next several years but will be much nicer than any of my other albums.

I really need to just dump my buffalo and V nickel set as those two are the worst but I can't seem to turn loose of them even tho they are really bottom of the barrel coins.

I just went to a coin show yesterday and though about taking them to see what a dealer might offer but I am so ashamed of them I don't want anyone to see them. So here they sit.

Enjoying reading about everyone else's successes and conflicts! Great topic GR58.

I am content with my collection. My collecting has had many ebbs and tides from the need to fill holes in my Lincoln Cent folders when I was eight, to purchasing graded coins for my commerative set. My tastes have evolved to higher grade specific items and mint purchases to maintain my modern sets. Lost are the discovery of a missing coin from circulation or silver but it still thrills me to fine a Wheat cent.

I want to get rid of the cleaned coins in my type set. Those were bad moves on my part.
