Hello all. I am a new guy. I have mainly pre 1964 silver, not many, mexican pesos, and australian silver.

I also have a Phennig piece dated 1854. One side has a large "1" at the top, PHENNIG in the middle, and 1854 under that. The markings are very sharp and clear, a ring of knicks around the edge about 1/64th inch in from the edge of the coin. The edge has sharp and well defined cuts very close together. The other side is what appear to be oak leaf clusters around the outside with a coat of arms in the middle. the shield has a horse/lion at the left top and bottom right. Two trees at the top right and a banner/flag at the bottom left.there is a shield in the middle. A crown at the top with, what appears to be a "p" above it. Over all the detailing is still quite sharp and legible, my magnification is not good, the edge is sharp and I can feel all the cuts in the edge. The coin is a redish/rust color and rings like a silver dime would when dropped.

I really would appreciate some help IDing this piece. I found it while messing around in front of the house I rented in Baden-Wurtenburg while I worked in the area.

Thanks for the help

Well the coat of arms you described is from Bavaria, though that coin would say PFENNIG and not PHENNIG and there shouldn't be a "p" above the crown.

You are correct Numismat. There is something above the crown, however my magnification is not great and my eyes arent either, so now I can rule out a "p". Thanks

It may be the cross that was simply dinged or flattened.

You are correct again Numismat, the word is spelled PFENNIG.

The coin appears to be the KM-420 as previously identified - a Bavarian Pfennig with a mintage of over 1,842,000 coins made of Copper. If the "ring of nicks" is not post strike damage - the coin is worth in the $5 range.
