David Bowers: "The Mint had a bunch of S-mintmark dies on hand in 1955, with no nickels scheduled to be struck in San Francisco, and with the Mint set to stop coining operations, seemingly forever, by the end of the year. Rather than waste them, at least 10 dies were overpunched with D mintmarks, generating the overmintmark. Thousands exist today, making the variety easily obtainable" |

There's also the book Redbook Guide to Buffalo and Jefferson Nickels. I haven't read it, but I'm assuming it lists some of the major varieties... Edited by coinsearcher83

did another box of nickels today. I guess any box that you pull silver out of can't be a BAD box, but still not much to sing about. only 11 1959 and earlier, including a 44S war.

Box #36 down PLUS 20 CWRs no silver  36/30 30 silver no buffs no proofs no V's 1977 Gold Plated Nickel- very worn, only a small layer of the gold is left golden toned 2006-P 2000 Fish nickel  like a dozen canadians-no pre 82 Dates: 1951-D 1957 1953-D 1949-better than most 1942-D AU 1938-really nice coin! Box #36 results: 1939 1940 (x2) 1940 s 1941 (x3) 1946 d 1948 1953 d (x2) 1954 1954 d (x2) 1954 s (x3) 1955 d 1956 1956 d 1957 d (x3) 1959 d (x4) 2009 d (x14) 1970 s proof (pictured below) Bad lighting and bad photo because I used my phone. It doesn't really show the mirror like look in the fields, but in hand you can see it. I compared this coin to some other BU 1970 s nickels I found and this one definitely looks different. Are there any easy diagnostics to tell for sure whether this is a proof or not?   |

Okay so I took better pictures with my phone and convinced myself that it actually is a proof. So yay, I finally found my second proof nickel.   |

Id say thats a proof ONLY because it has full steps. Most of this year tend not to.

That was was of my main thoughts as well. The other uncirculated 1970 s nickels I have found pretty much have no steps.

Think it's time to pick up a few boxes of nickels. With the silver drying up in boxes of halves, nickels provide some interesting and fun finds. It's been about 2 years since I've searched nickels, but I remember War Nickels and pre-1959 keepers being relatively easy to come by. I love the thrill of the hunt! Nickels from the 1940's and 1950's are the only U.S. coin you can still consistently find in boxes/rolls and even in change from a purchase. I'll post my finds later in the week. |
