I picked up around $90 or $100 in nickels at various different banks and here is what I got:

Did my first box today and found 1 1945P. I don't think I'll be doing nickels anymore. Simply took too long not being able to rim search compared to searching dime boxes. In addition from what I've read it seems that you guys average about 1 silver nickel per box. I average/always find 1 silver dime per box.
Can anyone tell me the main reason they search nickels as opposed to other denominations. Is it just a lower initial investment per box?

ozerman: I search dimes for silver, that's why I edge search and don't look at each coin individually. I could really care less about what else I am missing because it isn't worth it for me. And I agree, if you are just looking for War Nickels, searching a box of nickels isn't worth it... But I search nickels for the fun of it. If there were no silver War Nickels ever made, I would still be searching. I, as well as many others here, are trying to put together a complete set of Jefferson nickels all from circulation. I only have 3 dates left and I will have a complete set. When I finish, I probably won't search nickels anymore because I will have completed my goal. But I think it will be such a huge achievement when I am done. I will have the pride of knowing that I completed it from circulation. And when I am older I can say I paid a nickel for each date from the bank. In conclusion, I'd say half dollar searchers and such are mainly searching for the silver. And nickel searchers are doing it more for fun. Of course this opinion can't be completely true, but I think it is for the most part right. |

Started on 7 more boxes today Just read this and wow! What a great 2 boxes! And I am surprised at how many 1939 s nickels you have found. I have 4 but I did not find them in a week. Keep it up, can't wait to hear the rest of your results. Are you also trying to complete the jefferson set from circulation? And man I wish I could get 7 boxes at a time! Most I ever search is 2 at a time. I just find nickels as kind of a hassle to dump. When I dump coins I usually don't like to dump a ton, makes it easier on me. |

Great response murrellington, I too am trying to put together a complete set, just as I am with all denominations. I'm almost complete with the nickels except for a few key dates. I guess I'm just tired of searching for them and stopped a while back. I'm sure I'll get back into it eventually.

Searching one denomination a whole lot does get old. I got burnt out on cents real quick. So I moved on to nickels. And I do dimes every week to to change up the constant nickel searching.

Yep same as what those guys said,nickels are the funnest for filling up a dansco. In 20 some boxes, Iv got all but 5 in pretty good shape. They are heavy, and a pain to dump, I usually do two at a time. Dimes and halves is better for silver, I did a dime album 64- present in two boxes, aside from 2009 D, and 2011 D, nice coins, I'm just rim searching them for now for the silver. I dont do pennys, so dont know or care about them, Iv got alot of wheat cents, and only save my cooper pennys from daily change, no clue if I have any good pennies or not, but I do have about 300$ face in pre 81 cooper, and a big jar of 82-83, not sure how many are cooper, will worry about that later. They are just fun, dont know if Ill get my coins I need untill next winter, its gonna fade out for me soon with summer coming, then Ill just do my 2 boxes of halves a week, be to busy with other stuff, untill winter comes.

I think I have only three dates left to find as well: 1950D, 1938S, and 1939S. I have a 1943D but it was given to me as a gift from a friend. Once I officially start on my Jefferson nickel album, I will probably buy some better condition War Nickels to make the album more presentable. On a side note, I picked up $40 in Brinks nickels and found a 1943P. I'll take it.  |

murrellington, Yes I'm planning on putting together a set from circulation. I have all the hard dates except the 50D. I'm going to have to buy a Dansco album on ebay soon. I have a standing order from 2 Chase branches for 3 boxes a week from each. Also get boxes from Wells Fargo and BOA all the banks I deal with in my area are very accommodating and polite. I've only had trouble with a couple Wells branches they wanted to charge for the boxes. Seems that it is up to the manger at the branch so I do not use those branches. I feel I have been very lucky so far this year with my finds. Good luck and happy hunting that's what it is about. |

Tried nickels for the first time today. None of the banks had halves, so I got about $40 in nickels instead. First roll had a War Nickel! I bought some Whitmans and got to work. 39 41 41D (AU!) 43P 44P 47S 54 55 58 59x3 2009 Canada Steel Edited by CPC24
