Wheezy, Thanks for the encouragement! I will do another 3 or 4 hundred rolls this week (more if I can get motivated) 12,500 isn't far off; would like to be there around Labor day or so.

Just out of curiosity, how willing are tellers to hand over boxes of nickels? I know from my experience with half dollars that banks hardly ever have them on hand so they are rarely available for purchase, but what about nickels since they are incredibly more predominant in circulation? It would seem that all banks DO have a box or two of nickels they can spare but approx what percentage actually WILL be willing to let customers buy them?

I order mine. The branch I go to isn't very big so I don't want to clean them out.

Absolutely Amazing ....... Congratulations on your Milestone of 10,000 rolls.
I'm at 1690 rolls so far ..... and your clear data on what you have found is very helpful to me as I continue the passion and quest to complete my circulation-strike Jefferson collection.
I offer a tip of my cap to you ..... Thanks for sharing!
Best

Thanks Nickelsearcher!
Looks like you are off to a pretty good start there yourself; keep it going! It would be nice to see somebody (like yourself) look through a large quantity of rolls in a different part of the country just to see if the results are similar. Good Luck!
_22_,
Honestly, the past few weeks have been a little tougher, as I have been going through so many trying to get to the 10,000 rolls. I find it all depends on the bank; since I try to stick to Brinks rolls (shrinkwrapped) I can't just go to any bank. I find 5/3 Bank to always be accomodating (even though I do not have an account there), as does a local (Central KY) bank called Central Bank. But most smaller banks, if you don't have an account there forget it; they won't help you.

From a commercial bank, nickels are actually quite easy to get since most banks keep them on hand for everyday transactions, commercial banks tend to have numerous boxes on hand as opposed to halves which they do not regularly keep on hand. For small savings and loan type banks, asking for more than a few rolls of any type of coin is hard for them since they do not keep multiple boxes of coin on hand. -XoG

I have an idea ....

I have been doing exactly that .... and would enjoy reporting to the forum the results of my search versus CD finds
I live outside Baltimore MD and the timing of our searches are concurrent ...... so my data could perhaps shed some light as CND wrote about.
Bottom line ..... I respect CND efforts and will not use his (her?) dataset for this comparison without permission.
Soooo ... Coppernickeldaddy ..... do I have your permission to use your 10,000 roll data to compare results with my 1,670 roll data only within this forum?
Let me know ...... it will be an education for all us nickel serachers

nickelsearcher,
There was a similar effort under way about a year ago with cents, called "The Cent Project". I might be mistaken, but I believe that Chuck of coppercoins.com was behind the effort. I think he wanted to get folks from all 50 states to each go through a 5000 count box of cents and take note of what was inside. 25,000 rolls is a lot more than a 5000 count box, but the idea was to try to see patterns around the country of what circulated and where. I'd love to see others try what I am doing with the nickels, and keep track of what they find! I am only looking for older coins, but it might be interesting to see what else is out there in other geographical areas, even pertaining to older nickels. Feel free to use the data I have on the site for any comparison study purpose on the site. Obviously, the only thing I would request is to not publish anything outside of CoinCommunity, as I have interest from a national publication to write an article upon completion of the 25000 rolls. So, HAVE FUN!!

Agreed coppernickeldaddy!
I am in awe of your efforts in roll searching .... we started 1-month apart and you are 6x ahead of what I thought was a fast pace on my behalf. :)
Anyways ..... I fully respect all your hard work and promise to summarize the comparison between our data ONLY on this forum.
I hope that you and others might enjoy my summary ..... it will be different than just a 'count-the coins' thing.
Having an education in both engineering and statistics ... along with a passion for coins ...... I have developed for my own use a method to track my roll searches ...... it gives me a very clear view on answering the questions of circulation obsolence.
I will, with your consent, plug your data into my method and offer to the forum a direct comparison .... your 10,000 roll data versus my 1680 roll data. This will result in some insights on circulation obsolence that I have not yet seen discussed on this forum.
This will be both fun and educational.
All that said ..... I work way too many hours and it may take a while to get this comparison done. Stay tuned for my post on the results.
Whatever happens ...... I will never step on or infringe on whatever long-term publication rewards you will get from your hard work.
Best
David

nickelsearcher,
I look forward to your work! Hopefully it will inspire others to get involved and do something similar in other parts of the country. There are a number of nickel maniacs on this forum, and your studies will give them some interesting reading!

Searched my very first box (50 rolls) today and found 14 pre-1960, no silvers though. 14 seems to be a decent number of pre-60's however it is lower than most everyones' averages. I did stumble upon a 1990 Bermuda five cent coin but nothing else of interest. I will definitely be picking up another box or two on Monday, hopefully with a little better luck!

I believe the first year of the "Fish Nickels" was 1970, when Bermuda's coinage went decimal.
