Wow, it's been over a year since I last searched any nickels. Probably because my bank of choice started charging for rolls.  (Got my monster box with over 500 low-grade buffs, and another with about 25 older proofs from that bank. Good times!  ) Was able to put an entire circulation set of Jeffersons together except for that PESKY 1950-D! Yes, I actually found several buffalo semi-keys including a 1921S and still no '50-D! I'm tempted to get back into it, and I just might... |

Ive got a box in my bag waiting to be ripped open when I get home from work. Ahh, Friday night nickel nights... and a box of pennies too!

I'm going to get my first box of nickels, I've only done rolls here and there and boxes of pennies, does anyone keep 1982 1983 nickels?

well I did pretty good, I filled a few holes in my book I'm trying to fill from circulation, including the 1942 P wartime, which was the only wartime of the box. Did manage 2 2009d, which I only started looking for in this box. I think its a good find, I know its a low mintage, relatively speaking. The book I have is the 1938 to 1961 so that is what I am working on primarily.
also keeping 24 pre 60 coins after throwing back some of the most common pre 60s.

Found 15 wars and 5 buffs this week in 2 bags and 3 boxes total. Have another box to go through.

Box yesterday was garbage. Only kept about a dozen pre-60. There were two 1950 nickels, so that was a plus. Need to check both of my nickel books to see if they are upgrades. Otherwise really disappointing. Have two more boxes to check

I think nickels have finally dried up. Halves, Quarters, and Dimes dried up a long time ago. Nickels were the place to go until this last year. I've kept statistics and pre-60 coins are half as frequent as they were even 18 months ago. I used to find 3-4 War Nickels per box. Now it's one every other box. Key date Jefferson or semi-keys are very few and very far in between. I haven't seen a buffalo in ages. Nickels are still better than other denominations, but the days of when you could complete a set 38-present are gone. Even a set minus the 39-D, 50-D, and 2-3 other really tough ones is now pretty much impossible. That used to be possible with about 5-8 boxes. |

It's gotten tougher. The returns get to be less and less, but we're all coin hunters - what else are we gonna do?
2 boxes today. One was junk, few pre-60's and nothing else.
Second box had 2 wars in it

I think the reason nickels are drying up is because so many collectors are taking out everything before 1960. It doesn't leave anything for the next guy. My son and I started collecting nickels because our find rate was better than with pennies. There is too much competition in pennies and dimes and quarters. We never tried halves.

I think your right I never saved anything before 1960 except for ones to fill holes in my Dansco the silver and a few key dates.
The others are waste of time there will never be a market for them in my opinion.
People will get tired of holding on to them and dump them eventually.

I found this lurvly 1966 Nickel proof today!  A couple of small dings but overall quite nice. I still can't believe people are spending coins like this. It's the third proof that I've found this year. The other two were quarters. |

Went through a box of nickels today before work. 3 dated Buffalo, 2 silver, a nice 1959, a History Channel token, and some foreign job.   |
