Hi Carlos - the first looks like a significant die failure. The 2006 looks like PMD (ground) as you can see the burnished metal rolled over the rim edge. Research the die failure by the year of the nickel to see if it is a classified error coin. Good luck!! |

That's a pretty impressive nickel, carloscoria. I've never found an error that dramatic in 3 years of coin roll hunting!

I never saw one like that either. Sometimes I see what appears to be damage, but nothing, at least to me, that looks like a mint error. Just a question, anyone ever find a whole roll of War Nickels? I read on the half thread they do at times, or a lot in a roll/box. Thanks. |

Great nickel finds everyone! Man I gotta get a box soon or else I'm gonna go mad! I found a nice 1923-S in the change drawer at work yesterday.

Phil5280, I envy you. After 8 yars of roll searching I broke down yesterday and BOUGHT a 43D to complete my nickel collection. Everything else was found roll searching but the 43D. I may continue to search , hoping to find one in circulation so my collection is truly from circulation, but I could not stand that empty hole staring and laughing at me every time I looked at my nickels.

just wondering what a War Nickel is worth to sell and if any aside from the errors are worth more than melt? I was looking for information and really couldn't find much |

Words of wisdom from ages past, "Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, or someone is willing to take for it."
So what is it worth to YOU? That is what it is worth, and if someone offers you more for it, then you get a bonus. If someone offers you less, then you probably shouldn't sell it.
Currently all I know is "melt value" but I don't like that term and you cannot melt nickels anyway since the 2006 law, so let's say "content value". Sadly with coins there is all that grading nonsense too, so that will factor into intrinsic value and that will vary depending on who you ask.

After about six months of inactivity on this front I finally got a box a couple of days ago. I was gratified it didn't contain all new nickels which happened to me twice last year. No war or Buffalo nickels, no key dates and no 2009's. I did find both a P and a D for 2014 and a few common 40's and 50's. Best finds were a 1993 proof with just one or two tiny nicks and a 1952 S. It's a shame folks throw proof coins into the wild like that. I think I've now found a cent, a dime and a nickel. |

Proof finds are fun and it sounds like yours is still pretty fine. Some just become 'normal' looking and unless you know it's a proof, may get passed over. 4 proof nickels so far this year. I also found a quarter about a year ago but no cents or dimes just yet.

BBF90 - any high grade post-1959 nickels in the mix? Keep your eyes open for high grade 1982s and 1983s worth saving perhaps.

Rackster - Thanks for the advice, I will definitely keep an eye out for the 82's and 83's.
I was able to upgrade a 69S. I also kept a nice looking 81D, and 87D.

Terrific! Check the reverse on your 1981D - there is a more significant double die reverse variety that year. I believe it is most noticeable in EPU. If you are lucky, you'll see extra serifs at the tops of each letter in EPU. I'm going from memory so look it up to be sure what the DDR was. I'll see if I can post a link. |
