This link is CONECA and there appears to be two varieties â€" http://www.varietyvista.com/Variety....htm#_1981-D

This link is to Brian's Variety Coins which has pictures of -001 (you'll have to scroll down to the bottom of the listing) - http://www.briansvarietycoins.com/shop/cat/3

Only three pictures for Brian's old listing, but it should help you identify if you got one of the varieties. Good luck!!

2 bags yielded 3 War Nickels, 4 of the semi-key rarer (<20 million minted) s mint nickels and a great lamination error with the peel intact

Cbass - if you don't mind me asking, what are you hunting for? I'm sure that you had a bunch pre-1960 and a bunch of latter date AU/BU coins. Out of two bags, it appears you have a short list. Maybe your Jefferson album is complete and looking for upgrades?

I did 4 rolls yesterday and all I got was a date-worn buffalo and the next oldest were 60s.

Rackster - you are correct. I have two complete Jefferson nickel albums (38 - 61) Whitman - all from circulation. I rarely find a keeper (upgrade) - usually months between upgrades.

You are right my list was incomplete - I also found a couple of rolls worth of pre-60 that I neglected to mention.

No buffs, no Liberty nickels.

I hunt for buffs, proofs, Liberty nickels (V), War Nickels, and pre-60 (I only keep coins without scratches and toss the worn ones unless a semi-key). I do not keep newer than 60 anymore. never really did.

Have found a bucnh of buffs, proofs and keys/semi-keys over the yars as well as War Nickels and an occasional liberty.

2 boxes today, 1st had only a 1957 as it was mostly new coins. 2nd box was much better with 42p, 43p, and 45p silver.

CCbass - nice going piecing your Jeffersons together from the wild. A nice accomplishment!! I'm adjusting my standards of collectability at this point else I'll have one heavy collection to move about!

Skibs - nice on the silver! I got 2 in the last box, the most I've gotten out of one. I would be delighted with 3!

tkbsic - is that Buffalo dateless? You may want to pickle that nickel to see what you would have found had you found it a decade or two earlier.

Rackster,

My son and I have adjusted what we keep three times over the years. We currently keep:

All silver nickels
All Buffalo nickels
All Liberty nickels
All nickels with a mintage of under 15 million

We used to keep:

All proof nickels
1938p
1958p

The later groups became too easy to find and took up too much space in our folders, so we stopped saving them.

Now as we do boxes, we typically keep from zero to two per box.

Date is gone. I thought about giving it an vinegar soak, but is it really worth the stinky effort?

$50 in Nickels today.

Key date find, my first 1939S. It's not in the best shape but I can't complain.

Jon - sounds like you and your son have amassed a hoard of nickels and gotten to a point that you must thin the heard. A terrific spot to be in! I'm certainly there on the common dates; time to review for varieties and determine what to do with the rest. Taking up too much space at this point and unless there is a variety to be had, not worth the space it's taking up. I note that your updates show you and your son are having nice success with the semi key nickels. It's fun on my part to hear (read) about that success. I'm pleased your son has some quality time with his dad; good times! My son will hunt on occasion or sort dates for me but that darned XBOX is such a magnet!

tkbsic - LOL. A tight lid is required and a safe spot to avoid spills else one risks a stinky mess. I'm a curious bird so for me, a quick experiment by the sink gets me my answer (I use the 50/50 blend so after a few minutes, the solution gets dumped and coined rinsed). Up to you if the juice is worth the squeeze.

baseballfan/fastgc - nice pickups on the 39S and the War Nickel. I hope more (or better grade) are on their way to you.

Rackster,

I'll have to give an update on our counts for the under 15 million Jeffersons. It's interesting how they break down.
