Did a box of nickels earlier in the week. Found a nice 1937D buffalo, a silver, a clipped, and 2 1939. Did a box today and found 2 silvers (one PMD'd), 3 1939, and a 1938D    |

Opened up a roll of nickels at work today and looked for some well-worn pre-1960 ones to trade out. Didn't see any really old looking coins at all. Took another observation at those nickels later and saw a BU 1940 plain staring out at me. I got that one and noticed it had full steps after bringing it home and zooming in on it!! I couldn't quite capture a photo that shows the full steps, though.

I also posted this in my own thread but I figured I would share here too. First time I have ever went CRH for nickels. I think I might have a new type of coin to search, typically I stick with pennies. Not sure what most people usually get but hopefully this can be considered a success! $120 worth (60 rolls), the bank didn't have an actual box but they were mixed types of customer and machine wrapped. 35 from 1959 or older 1 1943-S 1 1936-P Buffalo nickel with pretty good date 1 1964 Canadian 1 1975 Canadian 1 1987 Canadian (I don't think this is really something good though) 2000 Bermuda(?) coin (I'm guessing this isn't really good either but kind of unique to find IMO)  |

Completed yesterday's bag and started a new bag. Approx 1/3 through
Another full date buff and a 45d war.

Does anyone collecting in this thread actually hold onto ALL nickels? Anyone buy into the theory that they will become scarce once the composition changes (likely to Steel which costs less than 1c to make)? They could be the poor homeless man's silver haha. I don't see the value rising anytime soon, I think today they are only worth 4c in metal value. At one point a few years ago they made it up to 10c each though. Although they changed the penny composition over 30 years ago I still find them in circulation so maybe the nickel would be the same way?
Anyway I'm sure it's been discussed already but this thread is 533 pages long! On another note, anyone know what page the OP's final tally was on? I'd be interested to see if he met the goal of 25,000 and what he found!

Our coin club held a Boy Scout Merit Badge clinic this morning at a show this morning. One of the requirements was to bring in one coin (all the same denomination) from the year they were born to date. Everyone brought in Lincoln cents except for 1 kid who did quarters. I even have problems finding some of the ATB Quarters. While the scouts were in the room watching a video I was talking to one of the scouts mother and she said he wanted to do nickels but they couldn't find a 2009. I explained to her about the low mintage of the dimes and nickels due to the recession and how I usually only find 1 in every $400 - $500 worth of nickels. So anywho this afternoon after I got home I did a box of nickels I picked up Thursday and there were 3 2009's in it  Also in the box was a foreign job, a higher grade 1959, a highly lustrous 1982 (unfortunately it has a bad scratch on the reverse), and another 1938D and a 1939S.    |

Most of the 1950's were 1956-1959. I picked the best of each date and threw the rest back. I need to do the same for the 1940's next. Price guides are based on survival rates in certain grades. I can tell you from personal experience that mintage numbers and price guide values do not equate to actually finding one in circulation. For example the 3rd from last coin I needed to find in circulation was a 1955P. 75¢ in MS60. Try and find one. Same as NIFC halves the book says some of the pre 1960 are valuable but every roll hunter has flooded the market. I now throw them all back. Edited by jack jeckel

I went through 2 boxes last weekend when I was home on spring break. I had a great time and also had a box of halves but got skunked there. The nickels on the other hand produced some great results including an awesome ender. Pics below.   Total results: 2 2009D, 2 War (43/44), 3 Buffs (35/36/37) |

Completed bag- ended up w 3 full date buffs and 2 wars.
Have found 27 full date buffs in the last 3-4 months. It's been a hot streak since January for buffs.
