Finally got enough cash to do my very first full box of nickels. I got 16 pre-1960 Jeffersons, with the oldest being a 1939. I also got an upgrade for my 1947-D and a 1954-S with a possible die clash on the reverse, though I'm not sure. Finally, got a 1993 Canadian, which was the only foreign in the box. EDIT: Only keeping the beaver, the 47-D upgrade, and the 54-S if it is a die clash. Don't feel like hoarding high mintage Jeffersons. Old 1947-D is on the left, new one is on the right   In this picture I see what I think is the outline of Jefferson's head around the Monticello, especially directly below it and barely above the top, on the right and left sides. Can someone confirm?  Edited by CrazyCat

Wow! Nice upgrade CC!!
Looks like the 54S might have a washed die clash but hard to say from your pictures. The die state looks late and you might be seeing a ghost at this point.

Thanks Rackster. Looked up ghost in relation to coins and it seems more like what my coin is, since Jefferson's head seems to be slightly raised on the reverse like on the images in this thread.
Also, thanks for the compliment. I was really surprised too when I saw the 47-D. I think it's the oldest nickel I've found in that condition. =D
Still keeping it even though it's not a die clash, it looks really cool, especially in hand.

It is amazing what great early Jefferson nickels are still out there. I come across 1940 and 1941 in XF/AU condition regular enough, so keep your eye open for them. I think that its to be expected to build your circulation set from the mid-50s forward in AU/BU condition. Before that, you will find many VF/XF/AU nickels to fill the spots. Searching nickels is for me...the most fun and most productive. Good luck on the hunt!  |

gratefuldad, I went through about 36,400 Nickels last month, so 910 rolls or 18.2 boxes.
And yes, Illegaltender... I still have fingers. LOL. It was cool finding that 37-D... found the dateless one first, by the way. I was opening the roll and my Mom and sister were there... my sister's like what did you find, a Buffalo? So I had her walk over to my hand. :)

And August is off with a bang... 60 rolls of nickels today produced 30 pre-60s including two 1938's and 4 War Nickels!    CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

Very nice 47-D, CrazyCat! Looks like you can even see some of Monticello's steps on the rear. That looks like at least an MS-60 coin. I'd need to see pictures from other angles to be sure on the grade.
As for the 54-S, it indeed is a late die-state strike. It's pretty common for the 1952 through 1954 San Francisco Jeffersons to look like this on the reverse.

50 rolls today, only 14 Pre-60s but one of them filled a hole. This 1945-P which literally looks like it was through the war! I'm now down to needing the 38-S, 39-D, 43-D, 50-D, and 55 Philly to complete my set out of CRH!  CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

Hi all, Did a small 9 roll hunt. Nothing too special, except a 1941D which filled a hole in my son's book. He also likes to keep Candians, and we got a 1988 one.

Now the sledding gets really tough! Back when I completed my first Jefferson collection 29 years ago, I found exactly 1 each of the 5 coins remaining (along with the 38-D and 39-S)...
