I got another two boxes today, the first one only had 21 pre 1960 Jeffersons. Hopefully the next will be better.

21 Pre-60s actually isn't that bad for a box, Seth... I got $40 today (2/5 of a box), and found 7.

The only variety I know of is the 2005 d speared bison nickel. I need to expand my knowledge.

Keep hanging with us Seth. We will rub off on you. There are tons of varieties to search. The 2005 speared bison isn't a variety but more of a novelty coin. Some novelty coins like the 1937 D 3 legged buffalo or 1990 D missing the designers initials will generate interest and value. Error coins and variety coins are established and expanding areas in collecting. Many varieties and error coins have significantly more value than the common specimen for a date/mm.

Did $70 in nickels. Was gonna do $100 but due to a misunderstanding, the teller gave me halves, which he only had $30 of instead of nickels, but it went well. Got 19 pre 1960 Jeffersons. Got 3 keepers out of the whole lot. 1938x2 and a 1950. Wish the 1950 had the D but it is still the lowest mintage jefferson I've found this year, so I'm still happy  |

I just caught up with this thread after a long hiatus. I actually went to the bank for some nickels today for the first time since June (and since I got my license), but I forgot that they close at one on Saturday. I'll try to go back this week.
John77- You've had some amazing finds recently! Regarding the T1 Buffalo, a clipped planchet was my first thought as well. I probably wouldn't pickle it if I were you, since you already know the date, but if you want to, pour some white vinegar in a glass and add just a bit of hydrogen peroxide. Leave the coin in and check on it every few hours until you can see a date/mintmark. Once you can, make sure you dry it carefully- DO NOT rub the surface, since you may permanently wipe away the date.

Box 2 yielded 10 pre 1960 Jeffersons, and a Canadian nickel. 70% of the box or so was filled with 2013 p nickels.

Welcome back, Numisma. And thanks for the advice on the dateless Buffalo. Yeah, I've had some amazing luck with nickels this month. I'm still pinching myself over that LOOMIS batch, and most especially that AU '39-D. Showed a picture to my coin dealer friend and he was very impressed.

Here are my early Jefferson totals since I started CRH earlier this year:
1938-P: 10
1938-D: 2
1938-S: none!
1939-P: 79
1939-D: 1
1939-S: 3
That 1938-S is hard to find! One of these days.

John - can you get a shot of coin edge on that type 1? It may still hold a clue regarding the break edge.

That 1938-S is hard to find! One of these days. Interestingly, aristarchus, we have very similar totals for the 4 key pre-40 coins. Here are my finds so far this year: 1938(P): 6 1938-D : 3 1938-S : 1 1939(P): 39 1939-D : 1 1939-S : 3 As for the other keys & semi-keys (under 10M minted), I've found: 1949-S : 8 1950(P): 2 1950-D : 0 1951-S : 5 1955(P): 1 My "hardest to find" list is interesting too... I started this year without knowing the key dates, and so I just separated the coins by decade after checking to see if I had them in the coin folder. Only now am I going through each of the early decades to run the numbers, and it will take a while! With my three little kids this year have found two V nickels (1883, 1907) and 31 Buffalo nickels. Maybe we should have a thread where we post photos of our folders to show progress on nickels, cents, etc. That could be fun. |
