Very nice find, aristarchus123! As for me, I found my most circulated War Nickel ever today among my 32 rolls searched. This 1943-P which I grade at Filler-2. He ain't pretty, but he can be my brother!   CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

That has to be the most worn out nickel I have ever seen.
Other than intentionally damaged or ED nickels I have never found one without full rims or a readable date.
I stopped back at Chase this morning on the way to work to pick up another box of nickels in hopes of finding the rest of the collection dump. There were 2 golden toned UNC 1956 and 1959 nickels. I guess I was lucky to get 2 of the main boxes. I may stop by on Monday to try to snag another box form last weeks delivery before the new stock shows up on Tuesday.

I don't think I've ever found a circulated coin of any denomination in this poor of condition without some sort of damage. When you hold the coin, you can barely read the date, and the mintmark as well.
It's always cool when you tap in to some good boxes... I was lucky when my Wells Fargo had those two LOOMIS boxes a couple of months ago... 207 pre-60s including a 38-D, 38-S, an AU 39-D and several BU '56, '59 and '60 Philly coins with a scattering of other BUs through 1979... sadly, they were the only ones in that shipment.

35 more rolls today, produced 13 pre-60s including another 43-P. And this one is somewhat nicer than yesterdays, though still very circulated. Two more 09-Ds as well.  CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

Yes, I was very happy to get those 50-60 year old BU coins, aristarchus... funny thing, the most valuable coin I got yesterday was only 34 years old... a very nice Ch BU 1982-P!  CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

Check those BU 50s and 60s nickels for DDO / DDR. There are a number of them and a couple are 'Best Of' varieties. Good value there. And what a terrific 1982!! That's a nice find! |

Thanks, rackster! Yeah, that 82-P just kind of jumped out at me... I've actually now found 4 BU ones of that date. Those get the instant 2x2 treatment. I haven't looked at the Uncs from the 50s and 60s for errors yet... I will at some point. The main thing I've been doing is looking for coins with full steps. The vast majority of the coins I've seen only have 1 or 2 steps. A few have 3, and I'll occasionally run into to one with 4. The 1964-Ds are notorious for being poorly struck due to the sheer quantity they made... that said, I believe I found a 1964-D which has 5 full steps! Finding full step coins is challenging. Collectors are more likely to find FS coins from the 60s than the 70s, 80s or prior. 70s have proven to be the hardest even for AU+/BU coins. That's why I remind our fellow hunters to keep post 1960 specimens and check for varieties. I am in the process of sorting my recent CRH finds including 3 V nickels, 8 or so Buffalo, 3 war, and a number of pre-60 nickels. I started with the 60s AU/BU coins finding a dozen DDO and/or DDR specimens. The 1962 DDO / DDR is the most valuable of the lot worth more than all the Vs, buffalo, and War Nickels combined. Many would pass over that coin without a thought. To each their own but I can't overlook those coins...if I can help it. |
