That's why I remind our fellow hunters to keep post 1960 specimens and check for varieties. I am in the process of sorting my recent CRH finds including 3 V nickels, 8 or so Buffalo, 3 war, and a number of pre-60 nickels. I started with the 60s AU/BU coins finding a dozen DDO and/or DDR specimens. The 1962 DDO / DDR is the most valuable of the lot worth more than all the Vs, buffalo, and War Nickels combined. Many would pass over that coin without a thought. To each their own but I can't overlook those coins...if I can help it. Yes, I've discovered these past 8 months just how challenging full step coins truly are. For some years, they're truly like looking for a needle in a haystack. The 1983-P is also a very interesting date in terms of strike. The majority of these coins have a VERY mushy reverse, and of course no detail at all in the steps area. My AU/BU coins from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s are in the process of being organized so that I can do a mass inspection of them for errors, full steps, and other fun stuff. I'm just about done with this... I also just sorted my regular 1960-1963 Philly coins by date this past weekend (still need to do the Ds), so wish me luck in finding that '62 DDO / DDR coin! I got the coin at the top yesterday in a String&Son roll... one of 5 pre-60s in found in 8 such rolls... any guesses as to what the date might be?  CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

I inadvertently stumbled upon a "mini collection dump" when I made a very large (46 rolls) pickup of customer-wrapped nickel rolls the other day. Included in just 1 roll were 34 pre-1960 nickels, 4 1960s-era nickels, 1 1977-S proof (my first proof nickel find), and 2 modern Buffalo nickels. Due to their diversity and overall well-worn condition, my assumption was that this roll constitutes a small collection of interesting nickels that someone pulled from circulation in fairly recent times. The other pictures include additional finds from the same nickel pickup. The 7 additional pre-1960 nickels came out of another single roll, but I am unsure if that roll was deposited by the same individual.     |

Well, I am 1/5 of the way there... hit 200,000 nickels searched today in 8 1/2 months... Some of my interesting findings so far are below. I have found: 2,113 pre-1960 dated coins... so that's 21.13 per box of 2,000 or 1 every 95 coins. 79 Silver War Nickels... so that's 1 in every 1.27 boxes or 1 every 2,532 coins. 30 Buffalo nickels... so that's 1 every 3.33 boxes, or 1 every 6,667 coins. 14 Proof Nickels... so that's 1 every 7.14 boxes, or 1 every 14,286 coins. 9 Key Date Jeffersons... so that's 1 every 11.11 boxes, or 1 every 22,222 coins. 2 V nickels... so that's 1 every 50 boxes, or 1 every 100,000 coins. John, I admire your ability to keep statistics on that many nickels.
I keep them as well, but am small potatoes compared to what you've done.

Thank you, DCM... It doesn't take me that long... I usually spend 2 or 3 minutes a day logging my finds in my notebook, and at the end of the month, I tally my nickels. Found a nice little surprise among the first 20 post-200K CWR this afternoon... Only my THIRD 1990-D NO FS (designer's initials)!  CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years!
