If you found it in a roll or change, you are fine.

I know right. First I got excited then realized someone had to cut this poor coin. How can anyone ruin a 1949 nickel.

I finally got some time to do some nickels. I got a two boxes from the bank. First box had a 1935 buffalo and a 1898 V nickel! I was hoping for the trifecta with a War Nickel but just couldn't happen. 2nd box there was 3 War Nickels!! (1943 d, 1943 s, 1944 p) . And two more buffalo a dateless and a 1936. Lowest mintage coin I found was a 1948 s and it was better than average condition. Found a little over 60 pre 1960 nickels in the two boxes. I felt like I did pretty good. I've done aprroximatelt 7-10 boxes of nickels and found 3 V nickels. Is this just luck or is it pretty common to find them. Oh and the 1935 buffalo seemed to have More detail than the ones I had been finding. It is a little dirty tho. Thanks and good luck all!

I doubt it even registered in their mind.

Congratulations! V nickels are awesome, and an 1898 is a old coin! Very exciting.

I just did a box, and the highlights were only a 39-P and 49-S.

Nice finds folks!

Finding V nickels are very difficult. I seem to find them in clusters and twice, the clusters were sizeable. Finding 3 all year is a good year for most here so I wouldn't be upset if you are done for the year. Those early finds can skew the perception as you've guessed, so take note of all the other goodies you'll find more often along the way (e.g. the 1948S). I found a 1948S in my last box; ends up it was 1948S RPM-003. So don't forget to look for varieties especially where the condition of the coin is good enough to detect the subtleties.

Nice finds, Big7mag!

You may have hit upon a good little vein... I do A LOT of nickel boxes, and my range is typically 15-25 pre-60s, averaging right at 20 per box. 30+ per box is outstanding! In 10 boxes, I'll typically find around 8 War Nickels, and 3 Buffalos... Outside of my collection dump (where I found almost a full roll of Buffalos and V nickels), I only find a V nickel around every 150,000 coins. So finding 3 in 14,000 to 20,000 coins is VERY unusual. I'd definitely keep hitting those banks where you're getting those boxes. Who knows... you may even run into a Shield nickel!

Haven't done a box of nickels in a while, used to do a couple a month to the total of 28,800 nickel when I stopped counting. My finds echoed these reported, a couple buffs, maybe 1 or 2 silvers and handfuls of pre-63's. Never found any of the 5 keys, a few of the lower mintages (47s,58p, etc). Oddballs were Canadians, a Bermuda a British 6 pence(I think) and one of those "spy" nickels, like in the movie "Bridge of spies", but the back was missing, just a hollow shell. I saved probably 100+ that are RPM's, have yet to attribute those...Lincoln's had my attention. Maybe time for another box...

The key with finding the 5 Key date Jeffersons is persistency... I've found 15 of them (38-D:4, 38-S:5, 39-D:1, 39-S:5) in about 450,000 coins searched over the past almost year - about 1 every 30,000 coins. I tend to find them in bunches (usually three coins at a time in a short time span)...

Aristarchus congrats on the lower mintage coins. Thanks everyone it sure was fun to find them. When I am not getting half dollars I am going nickels when I have the time. John77, I figured It was more luck than it was find them commonly. I got another box nearby at a different bank today because the ones where I got these were close by the time I got there. I found 2 dateless buffalo, and a 1942p War Nickel. Good luck all!
