Monday I bought 6,360 nickels from 10 different banks... today I bought exactly 2,000 from 6 banks... Here are my best finds from those two days... I should mention I found a record high 13 2009-D nickels (and a lone 2009-P) in Monday's coins. These searches also produced my first ever back-to-back days of getting a semi-key 1942-D, and my first ever two semi-key 1951-S day, along with my first ever 1975-D with the mint mark next to the date as pictured on page 139 of the 2017 Red Book.  By the way, I have emailed Q. David Bowers about my find... will post some details if I get a response.   CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Nice finds! I was not aware of the 75-D mint mark error... I've accumulated $300 in nickels to look through, but haven't had the time, help!  Hopefully, this weekend the cold weather will allow me some time...  HH all! |

John 77 awesome find! I have been looking for that one too! I noticed it in the RedBook also and have kept an eye out for it. What is something like that worth? |

Thanks, berto and Big7mag... I wasn't aware of the error until I saw it in the 2017 Red Book last year. I have no idea what it's worth, but it appears to be pretty darned scarce as I have heard of very few reports of them being found. I'm guessing somewhere in the $25-100 range based on the limited information I've been able to find, but I honestly don't know. I've put it in a 2x2 and will run it over to my local coin dealer next Thursday when I make my monthly visit. CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Technically it's a variety coin as the mint mark was purposely put there.

Thanks, aristarchus123! Yeah... I put 2 and 2 together pretty quick when I saw it. And Rackster, indeed it's a variety coin. I do wonder exactly how many examples were struck as, at a later die stage, the variety developed an "atheist Cud" in the motto. I've found a couple of similar pictures. I found 25 pre-60s including a very beat up War Nickel among my 2,800 coins searched along with an impaired proof. It normally takes me about 28,000 coins to find two 2009-P nickels... well yesterday, it took me 10% of that to find two... First day ever that I've found more than one 2009-P nickel! Ever since I found a silver quarter in the Coinstar machine a week ago, I think I'm going back into the game of CRH. However, it'll likely be limited to nickel rolls or half dollars I'm able to acquire since I didn't get questioned when asking for my $20 paycheck for my weekend job in nickels. After all, they have a low face value so 20 bucks gets you a lot and there's a chance of War Nickels and buffalos. And best of all, I can put them into the vending machine at school and get quarters back so I don't have to dump a large number at my other bank! |

Good plan!! John - I found a 1943P in the last box that would make your latest War Nickel look particularly good. At least it is worth its weight in silver! |

Was going to pick up a box of nickels at the bank where I had been finding some good stuff. I did not make it there and was in another town 20 minutes over. I wasn't expecting the box would have much because it was a different box and had a different wrapper. However I still ended up with 3 buffalos and another V nickel. 1903 on the V nickel, one of the buffalo is a 1936, one is a dateless, and the other is a dateless but I am see either a 6 or an 8 on the end and it has an s mint mark on the back. Also found a 1955 p and 1947s for lowest mintage coins. Does anyone have any tips for the nickel to find the date. I thought I heard something about pickling before but do not know how to do that. Any help appreciated  |

white vinegar should help bring out the date if you have any. There is also a product called nic-a-date, but I prefer the white vinegar at this point, its a more even finish. Some coins can be brought back, some cannot. Hopefully something shows itself after 24 hours. If no hope after 48 hours, it may not appear. Have a good loupe too.
Good luck, def would be nice to bring out the date on the s mint.
