Sweet, mountainman_2! Some "pickling" might get you dates on the dateless ones. Yes, definitely go back to that bank! As for me, I'm going through yesterday's rolls and 20 of them in I've already herded and mined.   CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

John, I'd be curious on some of the dateless ones with mintmarks. I'm going to have to sit down one of these days and try the vinegar thing. Here's a pic of the 26-D. Nice finds on those V nickels, they're hard to come by.   |

Mountainman - no 1872 Shield nickel? That's a bummer! Nice haul on the herd! Fun to see them even if there are dateless amongst them. Time to put a pickled nickel collection together!! |

I found a 1950-P these two proofs. No buffaloes, unfortunately. The second proofs is so worn it has lost much of the mirror-like surface on the obverse.   |

mountainman_2, with the vinegar thing it's pretty simple... just take a flat storage container, put the dateless coins in and pour your vinegar in over them. Let them sit for a few days, add more vinegar as needed as it does evaporate. The less worn examples will start showing dates in 3-7 days. Within about 2 weeks you should have dates on most of them. As for me, I found my 7th 1939-S in yesterday's coins, and this one is REALLY nice!   CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

I was able to pull two War Nickels today (43p, 43s) and lowest mintage coin being a 59p in good condition. Good luck everyone! |

Even though they are under 10 million in mintage, the 1949s and 1951s have not been hard for us to find.
The only nickels that have been hard to find for us to find have been the 1938d&s, 1939d&s, 1950d, and the 1943D.
I agree with some of the other in that your location in the country determines in part how hard certain coins are to find.

Same for me actually when it comes to the 1949-S (24) and 1951-S (20) as through the end of February, I had found 44 of them combined in just over a year of searching (470,120 coins). Your 6 hardest finds are all in my top 7 hardest ones. My hardest finds are as follows: 1. 1950-D 0 2. 1939-D 1 3. 1955(P)2 4. 1943-D 4 5. 1938-S 5 5. 1938-D 5 5. 1939-S 5 (note, have found 2 more in March, 2017) 8. 1945-D 6 9. 1950(P)7 10.1942-P 9 10.1944-D 9 And yes, location, location, location! I've found at least 20 of every S-minted coin (including War Nickels) except the 1938-S, 1939-S, 1942-S (11), and 1944-S (18). In contrast, I haven't cracked the 15 barrier for five Philly coins: 1938 (15), 1942-P, 1945-P (15), 1950, and 1955. CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years!
