Went through 8 box and 100 customer rolls, 500 rolls in total;
9 bufflaos (1913D type I judging by the D and high field, 1924,1926,192x, 5 dateless);
5 wartimers (43Px2, 43Sx2, 44P);
0 proof;
Key and semi-keys: 2x38; 1x42D;1x51s; Filled no holes this time;
5 more to go:
38s,39s,45p,45d,50d.
Total searched: 2000 rolls.

quick question guys I'm going to get a box of rolled nickels tomorrow, I know a few things to look for, nothing compared to what you guys look for!
is there a list of things that are of value?

Others will weigh in with additional thoughts ..... but here is a 'starter' list for nickel roll searching:
Keep all coins 1959 and earlier (most are common date, but I like the hoard).
Keep all Buffalo and Liberty 'V' nickels ..... yes .... they can be found today in circulation.
Keep all War Silver coins (1942 through 1945 with the large mintmark above the dome).
There are nine keys and semi-keys to the series ..... keep all of these for sure ..... 1938d, 1938s, 1939d, 1939s, 1949s, 1950, 1950d, 1951s and 1955
Have some fun and let us know what you find.

I don't believe there is but.....Is there anything special with the 1970 S like there is with the LMC. Also what about other early "S" coins from circulation |

Replies to two posts with my limited knowledge ... First .... geepers ratman .... that 42S is GORGEOUS. Great find I say. My recent 42S would grade ..... uhhmmm ... G04 .... yours is outstanding. I hope our recent frustrated visitor sees that coin.  For Breed59 .... there is no 'equivalent' 1970s small date like a LMC. There is a rare (and very expensive) 1971-s proof w/o the mint mark ..... let me know when you find one! As for the earlier San Francisco Mint coins .... they are hard to come by in circulated rolls but as a general statement not worth much above face value .... with the few exceptions of the dates I posted above. Others with greater knowledge than me will hopefully weigh in and offer a contrary and better informed view. Lots of luck and best wishes in your roll searching! Ratman, that 42-S is awesome!
Here's tonight's total. First, 88 rolls that were all mixed - like 8 diff kinds of wrappers on them.
1 canadian, 1 bermudian
1 44-P war
11 68-70-S
12 common dates from the 40's
1 38-P
The second batch was a HF STRING & SON box - 50 rolls.
there was a bunch of unc dates from the 60's..I saved a handful of the nicest ones
3 buffalos - 29-p, 36-p (2)
5 war - 42-p,43-s(2),43-p,44-s
1 canadian
11 68-70-s
5 39-p
6-40 (5-p&1-s)
8-41, inc at least 1 from each mint
a few other commn dates from the 40's
I want to order a bunch but the bank says 1-2 weeks wait til they come in

Mdh157, that was a very nice String box. I never do good with Strings. Today, 120 rolls (2 Brinks boxes, 18 customer wrapped and 2 String rolls) 2 War Nickels (1942S and 1943P) The 1943P was better than the average roll find but nowhere near as nice as the 1942S. 54 other pre 1960. The 2 String rolls were mixed in with the customer wrapped I picked up from a small branch. They were one roll each 2006P&D. Strange to find a roll of D mint here in NC. |

My son and I went through 12 rolls tonight. He found three that he needed (42D, 48D, 54S)--but the big surprise was a 50 franc coin from the Bank of Central African States, dated 2003.

Mdh157, I get my nickels from all over the place. I started searching for half dollars (still do) and alot of these banks that I don't have an account with got used to seeing me (and assume I have accounts with them). I would ask how many rolls of nickels they could spare. Now I can walk in and get boxes if they have an ample supply. Just start off with smaller amounts and work your way up. As they use more nickels...they will order more nickels! The key is volume and when something is working for you (in your case the String boxes) work them over while the getting is good. The Brinks boxes were really good here for awhile, and I was grabbing as many as I could get. Good Luck!

Today 120 rolls (2 Brinks boxes & 20 customer wrapped rolls) The customer wrapped rolls were garbage, only 5 pre 1960.
1 very well worn (no date/no liberty) Buffalo, 1 War (1945S), 1950, and a 1988S Proof.
79 other Pre 1960.
