The Goal: 25,000 Rolls Of Nickels (All Searchers Welcome!)

1 brinks box, 2 War Nickels and one almost worn smooth V..189?, found all those about 15 rolls in I thought I was in for a dream box. Found a 48 D, only 6 more holes 38 s, 39 d and s and 3 War Nickels. The 39's drive me nuts, there are quite a few and I try to use mind power to make it a D or S but it never works (ha ha) when I flip it....nothing. I guess I should be happy I have the 50 D out of the way.

Again it is great to see everybody else's nickel roll finds here! Keep letting us all know what you find!

Another Update

First time in awhile an update is silver-free. Hopefully just a one-time occurrence. Nothing really of note this time around, with one exception. Nothing rare, or even scarce, but the first one I have found in over 14,000 rolls. No real surprise; it's Canadian.

I've been trying to pull one of those canadian 67 nickels for a while, I've pulled most of them past 1960 but that ones been eluding me. I think they stick out more than the regular canadians so they possibly stay out of circulation more. I wish whitman made a canadian nickels folder so id be able to organize the canadians I pull. A fish nickel folder would be a nice addition to there catalog to.

My step-grandfather had started canadian folders of all denoms up to quarters, and had at all of them at least half full. They sat in my grandmothers house (he died in '86) until she died in '06, and my mother got everythnig. I told her I wanted them but my stepfather took them along with a bunch of other stuff to an auction. I ought to strangle him!!

i did, however, get 4.5 rolls of canadian cents dating from 1929-the early 60's and a big handful of other denoms, which included 2 '67 nickels and 1 of each dime and qtr

Simon is happy--he just found a roll with seven silver nickels in it. Almost everything in the roll was old, so he got some upgrades, too.

It was part of a dozen rolls I got yesterday. Unfortunately, it cleared out the drawer. It was the only roll in the bunch with that type of wrapper, too. There was one other silver nickel in another roll, though.

I'm going to go into the bank tomorrow and order either $1000 in halves or $1000 in nickels (if they give me any lip on the halves). I have no problem getting coins from any of my banks but haven't triede to order halves yet. The last box of nickels I had earlier this week was packed in apr 09, and since the mint stopped making them early last year, it is quite likely a lot of stuff that has been sitting for years has gotten dumped back into circulation. hmmm....and maybe the same thing with the dimes,,?

too bad the dimes & qtrs seem to be impossible to find silver in, but the nickels are tough to get rid of when there are so many of them - just like the cents.

Find Rate Update ....

Just passed through 140,000 coins searched (3500 rolls).

Remember .... I consider a 'find' any nickel dated prior to 1960 ..... unlike CND who throws back the '59's.

Anyways .... to the numbers and hoping this helps calibrate some of the newer enthusiasts out there ....

Overall Find Rate is 1.272% .... this equates to an average of 25.4 finds per box.

Breaking this down to the 'special' coins we all search for .....

I find a War Silver Jefferson every 83.3 rolls on average (found 42 in 140,000 coins)

I find a Liberty 'V' every 1750 rolls on average (found 2 in 140,000 coins)

I find a Buffalo roaming in my rolls every 184.3 rolls on average (found 19 in 140,000 coins).

I find a key or semi-key Jefferson every 218.8 rolls on average (found 16 in 140,000 coins).

Interesting to note that I have found more total Buffalo nickels than I have the 9 key/semi-key Jefferson!

I used to publish statistics about actual Jefferson circulation obsolescence ..... but nobody cares so I gave up on reporting that data.

Soooo ... for me ..... after nearly 2-years of searching and 140,000 coins ..... still need three (3) to complete my humble Whitman 9009 ..... 38s, 43d and 44d.
