UGH  I wanted to go and pick up a box of nickels or pennies for tonight and the banks are closed. Aaaahhhhh, what will I do tonight. Oh I know  , I'll drink one of my micro brews! |

Can someone explain the 1939 DDR? I have never heard of that before. |

JonNickelCollector, 1939DDR (doubled die reverse). Notice in the picture that the words "Monticello" & "Five Cents" are doubled.

Since we did not know about that, we have never looked for that.
Do these nickels have greater value?

Do these nickels have greater value? Yes, the 1939 DDR is listed in cherrypickers & RedBook (but unfortunately not Numismedia. The last raw example sold for $32.50 on ebay. It was a lower grade example than the one I have pictured here. |

I just got into CRH last month and love the hobby so far, I really enjoy reading all the cool finds everyone has posted! I've only finished 8 boxes so far, still too early to post any spreadsheets. Anyhow, I've read previous posts about pickling Buffalo nickels, what is the reccomended ingredient mixture? Any pro tips? I have 1 dateless so far but anticipate many more. My other 4 buffalos were readable...(1) 1917 (3) 1936. |

I've used both and think the vinegar leaves you with a nicer looking coin although it can take weeks of soaking. Nic a date leaves a dark stain where applied. I'm sure others will have a difference of opinion. Some have secret process they use as they do it for profit. |

Just put them in some vinegar, keep an eye on it to make sure the vinegar doesn't evaporate. I've had coins take only a day for the date the show up, but I've had others take as long as three weeks. I like to check mine every three days or so. Patience is the key here. I do not recommend any of the other mixes, nor Nic-A-Date. I just had a dateless D-mint that also had a foreign substance on the bottom of the obverse of the coin. I pickled it and was able to make out the date as a 1917 - which fills another hole for me! The foreign substance came right off with some acetone. CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

Holy crap, ratman4762! 3 1939 DDRs and 4 1950-Ds... that's impressive! I am still looking for my first 1939 DDR. The boxes you mentioned the other day (in my thread) obviously skewed your 1949-S, 1950, and 1951-S totals quite a bit. I'm going to make a rough estimate and say you've searched around 2.5 million nickels or so based on our findings, others' finds, and geography... By chance do you have your totals for the other War Nickels? CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

Added the DDR to the spreadsheet after I found the 2nd within a year of the first. Found total of 1315 War Nickels which I kept track of on my silver finds spread sheet. (I wouldn't hesitate to say that at least 30% were 43p though) |

While everyone is roll searching in 2018, be on the look out for the 1939, 1944, 1946, 1947 and 1953 counterfeit http://www.error-ref.com/henning-co...feit-nickel/. I just read this on another post and will look for them while roll searching nickels. Interesting for sure. |
