My last box of MWR produced three War Nickels (1942-P, 2x1943-P).

These two were in the same roll. Not the prettiest, but I was happy to find them.

Nice job with the War Nickels, TomM!

As for me, I'm going to all of my usual branches of the bank Brinks services here, hoping to hit more of those amazing BU old Jeffersons... no luck on Monday when I bought 2,000 nickels total from two different branches... but I did come up with a 1950 Philly amongst 18 pre-60s, and SIX 2009-Ds!

The-Goal:-25,000-Rolls-Of-Nickels-All-Searchers-Welcome!

My ratio for 2009-Ds has been a little down on the year so far (well under 1 in 1,000 coins), so it's nice to get a crazygood 1 in 333.33 ratio.

Thanks, John77 and jbuck. Congrats on all those 2009s.

John77, have you (or anyone you know of) ever found a 2005-D speared bison?

It is my impression that these coins were only released in a small geographic area and gathered up rather quickly, such that it is highly unlikely that one could find an example in circulation today. I haven't found one, but I've only done about 100 nickel boxes.

Thanks jbuck and TomM... and, yeah, I LOVE finding those 2009-D nickels - I keep the nice AU and BU ones for myself and put the circulated and damaged/low grade ones up on ebay in rolls as I accumulate them.

I've never personally found a 2005-D Speared Bison... you may have better luck in the Error Coins part of the forum on that one... The best Jefferson errors I've found are a 1943-P, 3 over 2 in VG and the1975-D "near date mintmark" in XF, but it's got a few nicks on it.

Got 5 rolls of customer wrapped nickels from the bank today. It seems to be the discarded dump from another fellow coin roll hunter. Nothing special, until I see this odd one, a 1928 Canadian nickel!! I think it's cool and will keep it.

Nice find, EchoCoin2023!

As for me, I ramped up my CRH after the rain left us last week.

On Thursday, I bought 4,600 nickels, 720 MWR and 3,880 CWR... The Brinks MWR produced a shiny new 1956-D, likely again from that massive dump I ran into part of a month and a half ago... there were only 23 pre-60s total, with no significant dates... the saving grace though was that there were 7 2009-Ds amongst the coins!

The-Goal:-25,000-Rolls-Of-Nickels-All-Searchers-Welcome!

On Friday, I decided to dump those coins at my usual dump banks, and visited some other bank branches in a couple of neighboring cities in hopes of hitting some more of those BU hoard coins... I ended up buying two new boxes of nickels, along with 1,040 MWR and 120 CWR from another branch to go with 1,360 CWR rolls from two other banks...

So 6,520 coins total... well, one of the boxes had a really nice surprise in it...
The-Goal:-25,000-Rolls-Of-Nickels-All-Searchers-Welcome!

Yes, an AU S-mint Buffalo!

The-Goal:-25,000-Rolls-Of-Nickels-All-Searchers-Welcome!
A 1936-S which now resides in my Dansco (an upgrade from the VF/XF one I had).

That particular box also had 2 2009-Ps (though, strangely, no 2009-Ds).
The other box had a 1944-P along with 4 2009-Ds

The rest of the rolls were decent... not a lot of quantity, but good quality. There was a 1944-S, a 1942-D, a BU 1957-D (likely again from that big Brinks dump), another 2009-P, and five more 2009-Ds amongst the coins. I only found 33 pre-60s total, but I was very happy!

Just finished hunting another box today. Unfortunately, this was bit of a slow box, with a total of just 11 finds. I had 3 from the 1940s and 7 from the 1950s; the saving grace was a 2009-D in the last 5 rolls. But nothing else. On top of that, my bank branch is now limiting me to one box per week (of any denomination), but that's after they decided not to give out boxes anymore at all. So it was nice of them to make an exception for me, probably because we're good customers there.

On the pennies front, I did find a 1926-D and a 1928-D, so that was good.

Cheers!

Still some decent finds though.

Got 12 customer rolls today, and much to my surprise, found a 1943-P War Nickel! Was not expecting that at all in a customer roll. No album fillers, unfortunately, but I'm not complaining. It's kind of funny, though, that all 5 of the War Nickels I've found so far are from 1943: three 1943-S's and two 1943-P's. What are the chances, you know?

Pretty decent, I suppose. Although I would expect a 1944-P or a 1945-P to show up eventually...

1942-P 57,873,000
1942-S 32,900,000
1943-P 271,165,000
1943-D 15,294,000
1943-S 104,060,000
1944-P 119,150,000
1944-D 32,309,000
1944-S 21,640,000
1945-P 119,408,100
1945-D 37,158,000
1945-S 58,939,000

1943-S 104,060,000

1944-S 21,640,000
1945-P 119,408,100
1945-D 37,158,000
1945-S 58,939,000

Yeah, definitely. Being on the West coast, the 1943-S shows up almost as often as the 1943-P... interestingly, at least for me, the 1945-P has been a much more sporadic, and somewhat harder find for me than its 1944-P counterpart in spite of the almost identical mintages (and one less year of attrition to deal with). I'll total up my numbers at some point soon.

-----

As for me, been doing a ton of searching of nickels lately.
On 3/27 and 3/28, I bought a total of 13,720 nickels.
The-Goal:-25,000-Rolls-Of-Nickels-All-Searchers-Welcome! The-Goal:-25,000-Rolls-Of-Nickels-All-Searchers-Welcome!

2 Buffaloes (a dateless and a 1930), a 1938-P (my first of the year), a 1943-P, 2 1949-S, 1 1950, and 1951-S semi-keys, a 2003-S proof, 3 2009-Ps, and 13 2009-Ds highlighted these two days of searching. War Nickels have been extremely hard pulls for me so far in 2023. Barely above 1 every FOUR boxes... I'm not sure if this is the new "normal" or just an anomaly - I found about 3 every four boxes as recently as 2020 (pre-C0VID).

I grabbed another 3,800 nickels on 3-30-23.
The-Goal:-25,000-Rolls-Of-Nickels-All-Searchers-Welcome! The-Goal:-25,000-Rolls-Of-Nickels-All-Searchers-Welcome!

Another 1938-P, a trashed 1943-P, 2 1946-S, 1 1948-S, 1 1949-S, and 3 2009-Ds highlighted this search.

2023 Summary:
Through 3 months, I've searched 77,280 nickels, finding 820 pre-60s, 9 Buffaloes, 11 War Nickels, 4 key date coins (1938-S 2, 1938-D, 1950-D), and, thanks mostly to the two hoards, an impressive 26 semi-key date (1942-D 3, 1949-S 5, 1950 4, 1951-S 6, 1955 8) coins. I've also found 13 2009-Ps and 80 2009-Ds. Interestingly, the rate for the 2009-Ps (better than 1 in every 3 boxes) is much better than my historical rate, which is about 1 every 7.5 boxes. Conversely, I'm barely finding 2 2009-Ds per box in 2023. My old standard was closer to 3 of them per box.

Nice finds, John77 and AllSeasons. My next to last box was great: two War Nickels (43-P and 44-P) and a 1928-P buffalo.

But my most recent box produced nothing of interest. I'm starting a new one tonight, I hope to get back on track.
